Have to agree with your DH on this one Mich!! And make sure you have a car charger- kept in the car!! Get an iPhone - I swore I'd never get one ... And guess what I'm using now!

If you type cooking free in search in ibooks store (top right on ipad) it gives you a long list of free cookbooks
