RESCUED BATTERY HENS URGENTLY NEEDING HOMES IN VICTORIA
« on: May 07, 2013, 09:41:22 pm »
I know the forum is probably not the most appropriate place for an appeal like this, but if there is anyone in Victoria who could assist in the rehoming of some of these unfortunate birds - who are still good layers - and I understand make very good pets . . please take a look at this site . .A Victorian egg farmer has had a "change of heart" and is now dispersing his flock of battery hens, but apparently this coming weekend (May, 11, 12) is the deadline and there are at least 800 of them looking for a good home.

Thanks, Judy - that's appreciated!  Fingers crossed that some will find a home with a forum member or two! :-*

Mich.. They're going very well and growing so quickly! They're very sweet but still keeping fingers crossed that there are no roosters among them...

Why no roosters GF? Don't you want any more fertilized eggs? I'm not very chicken savvy.

I'd love to keep them Mich but we're suburban backyard... Council says absolutely not :(

They can Mich.. But it depends entirely on their personalities.... I've had some gorgeous ones over the years .. But you really need acreage to keep them comfortably ...

Poor chooks. I hope they find homes. I had a friend do this a few years ago and they kept laying for many more years.

.... And how! When we had chooks on a previous life - we omehow we ended up with about 5 I think .. Also in suburbia.. Had to box them every night in the garage. If we didn't it would be up at first crow (sometimes at just after 2am) to get them out of the tree. Our German Shepherd who slept by my bed thought this was great fun! She was so gentle and had a favourite boy she'd help round up. I must say there were some pretty special moments in the wee hours in the mist and the moonlight and just the animals. But that was some years ago-and eventually they went to different farms  :)

Here's one of the chicks I hope will be a hen (the white one)..

They're quite tame now ... Well sometimes!
