Thanks Kimmy - I made this in the square tin with blanched almonds on top. I love the idea of the two bar tins as well (good excuse to buy baguette tins) and the top decorated with flaked almonds and cherries looks wonderful. As DH declared it the best cake ever I will certainly be making it again with all the other ideas. Cake making is not my forte so great to find one that has the thumbs up.

Jimmy, it is good that it cracked on top. Can pour brandy down the cracks.

That would be a good idea Chookie. I have been known to inject my Christmas cakes with spirits. The worst part was asking for the syringe at the chemist.
