Recipe review - Tuna Empanada, Budget Busters
« on: June 10, 2010, 12:57:17 pm »
OK, only half my family likes tuna to start with, so this may have been overly ambitious, but this was NOT a success for us :( . The pastry was lovely but I think it needed a slightly hotter oven than the stated 160c.

I didn't think the tuna mix was too bad (just VERY strongly tuna and onion flavoured) but my family did. My children all eat tuna mornay reasonably happily, but really disliked this :( . The filling was also a little gluggy in texture - if I were re-doing the recipe, I'd add some celery and other fillers to lighten the flavour a little AND give it a little more crunch.

Thanks for the review violincuddles - I am a tuna lover but will stay away from this one.  Wonder if some fresh tomato and less tomato paste, along with your idea of celery would lighten up the filling a bit.

Thanks.  You might be right about the temp - it does sound a bit cool for empanadas.
