Yes buzzbee it is pretty normal, just like a pot of boiling potatoes with the lid on. Best to place your MC on an angle in the hole so as to let the steam escape. If the spluttering becomes too much you can remove the MC and place the basket on top of the lid instead to stop spitting going everywhere.

You can also turn the heat down to 90o once it comes to the boil and put the MC back in place (or tilted if it still dances around).

Welcome to the forum.  I got my TMX on Friday night and I am absolutely loving it.  Don't forget to give bread a try.  It is just so simple and so tasty.  Buy some fresh yeast and go for it.
