Well I bought the app.  Do have the book but don't like it much.  Pretty ordinary recipes. So why did I buy it ?  I have to get used to this new technology and any thing that will teach this old dog new tricks is worth the small investment.  I find this app very easy to use.  What I don't understand about computer technology in general is why don't the app developers give some very basic instructs for idiots like me.   For example if you wish to mark a favorite recipe in this app,  you first have to score it 1 to 5 .  I have oodles of cooking apps on the I Pad and they all are different.  Each individual must decide for them selves what they want.

I am trying to decide weather to buy the app or not, I don't have the book and a lot of the recipes listed for the book seem to be double ups of ones I have in other books, then take out any with wheat and dairy I wonder how many new recipes I would have that I would use? As far as apps go this is really expensive! I have non TMX recipe apps with 1000's of recipes that are free! I don't usually pay for apps as there are so many great ones that are free but I did buy robogourmet due to thermomix addiction, it is the most i have ever spent on an app, it has free updates which is how I justify it.
I might wait and see, if it is to get free updates e.t.c and other 'books' added to it it may be worth the money but at the moment I cant see the shopping list and meal planner being of use if I cant add my own recipes to it, now if i could copy and paste recipes from elswhere into it, that would be a different story!

haha chookie...whatever gets you there  ;D

ahoney...maybe download the lite version which is free to check it out...its available in french so i imagine its also available in english...as far as the updates I have no idea if htey are charged or not......most updates are free but there are some apps that charge as friends have told me but all my apps are free updates for hte moment!

Like chookie said everyone needs to decide for themselves...we can all have our opinions but we are all different and like different things except thermie...I doubt you will be able to however to add different recipes into it..unless they add them or link somehow the apps lol!

anyway maybe try the lite version first!

Was just trying the lite version of the Thermomix app, it's not bad (note. I don't have My Way Of Cooking book) though it def has some foibles. For instance re defining the behavior of taping on the left side of the recipe selector. If i tap on "Soup" or "Bread" or whatever then it should show me the available recipes rather than show me the highlighted recipe on the right hand side. That's basically counter to how most other apps work.

Also trying to swap between steps in landscape (particularly) and portrait isn't pleasant and it seems a lot of space is wasted (do I really need the ingredients visible in each step when in landscape?). The text is also small, yes. I can expand it by zooming but then I need to scroll around in a tiny box. I kind of like the page turning they've added in landscape mode but I wouldn't generally have the time to move it slowly enough to see.

It would be nice in future is they would provide menu packs like the Jamie Oliver app (don't have it but tried the demo) rather than an app per book, the problem with packs is there are often things you already have, can find here or just don't like but conversely you don't want to pay 0.99 for an individual recipe.

Regarding RoboGourmet I dislike one thing the dev has done there and created multiple versions of the same app, one for each language that app is available in. I don't understand why they have done it as you can support multiple languages in one app.

@Frozzie there isn't a mechanism really for doing paid upgrades beyond releasing a completely new app. In app purchasing can work to a degree but it only really works for existing users (where they have paid to unlock v2, v3 & v4 features) but breaks down when someone new gets the app. (do you really make them pay to unlock v2-4?)

@ahoney It's really not that expensive considering the effort that goes into the app, the artwork, photographie, video production, testing and so on. Yes other apps come with many many more recipes but how many of those are simply pinched from the net? The only downside of the success of the iPhone/iPad is that Apple has managed to devalue the worth of software (there are some pluses to this too).

Too many people now expect these apps to be $.99 or free or they complain about not getting their money's worth, that the app is too expensive and what not. Prices spiralled down quickly and now companies / indies need to rely on bulk selling to compensate for not being able to really sell for as much as a desktop version but to a more limited audience (hence the occasionally price drops to get Apps boosted up the charts, once up you raise the price back to normal). I suspect iOS users buy more apps than they ever would for the desktop :)

I'm guilty of it too at times, if there is an app I am on the fence about I tend to wait for it to be reduced in price and then grab it (AppShopper and notifications are useful for that).

Um I'll shut up now, sorry I'm both an avid iPhone/iPad user and signed up as a 3rd party Apple dev (Mac and iPhone/iPad) so I'm aware of the other side and how they could have done certain things.

I guess the other thing holding me back is I don't have a lot of faith in the Thermomix cookbooks there seem to be so Many recipes that need tweaking or don't work out, when your paying for them you expect them to be tested!

Are you using forum recipes more than those from books ahoney?  You will certainly never run out of things to try if you are.

Yes I have started using more forum recipes, can be a little annoying having to use my iPhone when the screen turns off though! Was using evernote but I don't understand it anymore ( can't find it on pc even though can clip to it, and can't work out how to clip from iPhone) something changed with updates and it's got me lost! I am using more and more quirky cooking recipes too as my boys are wheat and dairy free, now there's an app I'd be happy to pay for, she's so helpful! I guess I haunt heard the best reviews of Mwoc book either and have never seen it!

I don't have the MWOC cookbook and really love to get one. I just LOVE COOKBOOKS.

As for the app, I don't have the technology to use it. As I live in a rural area with limitd mobile phone reception, I am unsure how the technology with work out here.

I think perhaps both app and cookbook would be handy. I often forget to write down what I need on my shopping list and it would be good to be abe to look it up on the app, but it would never replacce the good old cookbook with pictures that are easy to use.

As for this forum, it is the best investment (in time only) that a thermie owner can make. I absolutely love looking at everyones wonderful recipes and I know it has been tested and successful. Also the friendships and knowledge you build along the way are priceless. I love you all, you are an inspirational thermie group xxxx

Dizzy, you don't need to worry about your mobile reception. You could just get a wifi based iPad and even if you don't have a wifi router you obviously have a computer that you could sync the iPad with
