Stef and Julia, lovely kitchens!

Julia, is that a fire extinguisher I can see on your kitchen bench? Have you been living dangerously?  :D
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

I have one too but it's a matter of working out just where it is if I ever need it.  I move it from time to time and then forget where I put it.  Just checked, found it easily enough this time and the fire blanket always sits in the same place so that should be easy to find.

We have a fire blanket but not a fire extinguisher.

How many of us know how to use the fire blanket?

I never gave it a thought until a week or two ago (and I don't know why I thought about it then).  Anyway, I was curious so looked it up on YouTube and now I know how to use it - which bears no resemblance at all with how I think I would have used it had I had a fire to put out in the past.

I have the fire blanket, too, Judy  It's in the kitchen and both the blanket and extinguisher are there when the gas bbq is in use also.  The youtube videos are very helpful and well worth watching . . .

Also good to note: the advice is to keep these at the other end of the kitchen to the stove - safer to get to rather than near a blazing stove top/pan, etc.

I think it's pretty normal not to know how to use something until you need it Marina.  I just checked the instructions on the fire blanket, seems easy enough but must watch the video to make sure I have it down pat.

I have 3 fire blankets. Just remember to to tuck the blanket around your hands to save from burning - hold the blanket up in front of you and place over fire - don't be tempted to lift it off and take a peek. Let the Fire Brigade remove the blanket - it is single use only. Run through this with the children so they know what to do.

I have a fire blanket and a fire extinguisher also in the kitchen.  We were shown how to use the blanket when we bought it.

I have a fire blanket in the kitchen. Extinguisher in the van and fire blanket. Do hope I never have to use them.
In 2012 when we were away I had something on the gas cooking, turned away to speak with someone at the caravan door, not realising the tea towel was near the gas. You can guess what happened, but as I was right there as soon as the smoke alarm went off I turned back and was able to pick it up and drop it in the sink. (fortunately empty)
I now never leave the gas burning in the van unless I am right there. Caravans melt too easily.

One thing the various YouTube videos also pointed out was to approach the fire from the side and, as mcmich says, make sure you tuck the fire blanket around your hands and hold it above your head to protect yourself from the fire.

LOL Yes it is!! DH took it from work, but I have no idea how to use it!! In fact, if there was a fire I doubt I'd even think about it as an option  :D
