Is it worth getting these books?
« on: October 24, 2011, 11:41:16 pm »
Prompted by hating to translate the German version of Everday Cooking (which is similar and different, for instance lacking the ketchup and self raising flour recipes) I was wondering if it's worth packing up the books mentioned in the poll?. Are there any must have recipes in them?

I've read pluses and minuses to some of the EDC recipes i.e. better versions on here/blogs for some and I don't think I've seen the other two books mentioned so far. So far we have:

Full Steam Ahead (English)
Fast and Easy Indian Cooking ""
A Taste of Asia ""
Jeden Tag Geniseßen (German EDC)
Wunder... (German cake/desert recipes don't remember the name off hand)

Tarasis, I have most of the books available in English but use most of the recipes from the forum or convert my own.  I love recipe books though and occasionally browse and choose something from one of them or, if a good review is given on the forum, then I might try them as well.

I agree that the EDC is a good basic book and I love the Indian one too.

the EDC is a good basics book and the Indian is the only other one I have, which has some great recipes but I use the recipes from this forum far more than either cook book.

I like the Fast & Easy book which comes with machines in the UK.    There seems to be less negative feedback on the forum on recipes from it but that may be because people use it less.

I love the Indian one too. But have made more recipes from the forum than the cook books. The Indian one is a close second. I bought the Asian one but don't like it and have not made anything from it.  Got talked into it at a demo. Wish I had bought the Vegy one instead!

I find the EDC useful, particularly hand in hand with the tweaks on this forum.  I have the begetarian book too, which has a few recipes in it that I like.  So far the Indian Cookbook, which you already have is my favourite so far. Tasaris, weren't you the winner of one of the"In the Mix" book competitions on the net?  I thought I recongized your name? If so you will soon have a new cookbook to play with then, but this books seems to be on another level from  "every day" cooking.

I was indeed the winner of that, though yet to have confirmation of shipping. Half expecting (and would kind of understand) TMX (who are I guess supplying & distributing the prize) turning around and saying no we can't post that over. I discovered yesterday that book was 1.2kg and cost about 60$ to post to Europe.

The Indian book is great, it's the one I use most, followed by Asian and then I don't really touch the other three. Preferring the forum, the comments and of course it's in English :)

in the mix is actually a good book to have because it's different from everything else on the market and online, and i always prefer something like that. it can't easy be selling cookbooks these days considering so many recipes can be found online, but once in a while if there is something with that edge, it's worthwhile. of course this depends on what you are looking for. in the mix isn't an edc and it has glamourous restaurant recipes and you have to think about what suits your life.

congratulations on winning the book - HO should honour the prize - they make plenty of money as it is. if they don't, shame on them.

Congratulations on winning the book - let us know if you do end up receiving it  ;)  If they didn't want to pay the huge postage cost, they should have said the competition was only for people in Australia.

I was desperate to own EDC and bought it via the UK and had it sent to Deutschland.  I am glad I have it but certainly it is not the greatest book on the planet by any stretch of the imagination.  The German books are wonderful, if you can read them!  Much higher quality and all the recipes work, unlike EDC.

Jeden Tag Genießen is fabulous, like EDC with a German flavour.  Viva Italia is wonderful, as is the Wunderbares Backen but it is a baking book only.

I am going to get the Varoma one in December, as Ed only allows me one new Thermomix book a month, and it makes the anticipation last longer!
