I was so happy to find this recipe and try it out as bread and butter custard was a huge family favourite in my growing up days and it had dropped off the radar through the years.
I made this recipe several times over the Christmas period as we have had longterm visitors in the house.
We didn't have Grand Marnier but Cointreau did the trick.
I have to admit I didn't have panettone either, so used fruit loaf.
I found the majority of the chocolate chips absolutely unnecessary - dominant and not connected into the pudding in the way the other ingredients were.
The second time I made it I left the chocolate out entirely and felt the pudding was the better for it.
Have to laugh about two situations with this pudding - once the phone rang while I was at step 2 and my guest (not a strong English speaker) continued the recipe without setting aside the butter/marmalade mixture. One might have thought the butter would spoil the custard but all was well.
The second time, I had made the recipe late one night, ready for a special breakfast. Covering it with a teatowel and leaving it out on the bench was too much temptation for my guests, though, who had devoured half of it before anyone else got up, carefully replacing the teatwel of course!
