I have a Herman going as well. Started last night. I just stirred him and he's looking good. ;D
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

We're going a bit later this year MJ. From the middle of May to the middle of June. The old car needs his annual check up on May 8th.
May all dairy items in your fridge be of questionable vintage.

It's only day three for my Herman. The weather has come over all wintery and Herman isn't doing anything. Am about to move him to a warmer spot. I'm so excited. It's like a foodie chain letter.

Lol I like that. Foodie chain letter.

A much better idea than those real chain letter things (I can't stand them)

Exactly dede. This is such a lovely idea - give three mixes away to friends who give three more away each.
The recipient is getting a cake out of it and wonderful sentiment.

Day Nine.

Herman was hungry so I fed him the same feed as Day Four.
110g four
220g sugar
250g milk (again I spoiled Herman and warmed his milk)
After his feeding I divided Herman into four equal parts

Each Herman Starter is approx 430g
The three Herman starters(here in the plastic containers) can be given away with these printed instructions.

Herman the German Friendship Cake.
German Friendship Cake: Introducing Herman
Hello. My name is Herman, I'm a sourdough cake, I'm supposed to be on the worktop for ten days without the lid on.
You cannot put me in the fridge or I will die!
If I stop bubbling I am dead.
Day 1 Put Herman in a large bowl capable of holding 2 litres. Stir him and loosely cover with clingfilm.( I just covered mine with a tea towel)
Day 2 Stir well.
Day 3 Stir well.
Day 4 Herman is hungry! Add the following ingredients, stir well and cover again:
110g plain flour, 220g sugar, 250ml milk.
Day 5 Stir well.
Day 6 Stir well.
Day 7 Stir well.
Day 8 Stir well.
Day 9 Herman is hungry again. Add the same ingredients as Day 4. Divide into four equal portions and give three away to friends, along with a copy of these instructions. Keep one of these portions if you want to make a new cake.
Herman No 4 stays with you and is ready to be baked the next day.
Day 10 Herman is very hungry indeed! Stir well and add the following ingredients:
220g sugar, 220g plain flour, 2 eggs, 2 heaped tsp cinnamon, 2 heaped tsp baking powder, ½ teaspoon salt, 175ml oil (sunflower or olive), 2 cooking apples, peeled, cored and cut into chunks, 140g raisins/sultanas (optional), 70g walnuts (optional).
Mix all the ingredients into Herman and put into a large greased roasting dish. Sprinkle with brown sugar and dot with 50g of butter.
Bake at 180C/gas mark 4. Check after 35 minutes — he may need 45 minutes.

The fourth Herman is mine (in the bowl) (You can keep one of the starters if you want to start all over again)
See you tomorrow Herman for Baking Day.
Good night Herman. :-*

Such a shame that forum members live so far away as I could have given enthusiastic cooks my starters JD. ;D Well all but Gert as I know she only cooks the Chocolate Guinness Cake  :D :D

Thank you so much for all the explanations CornishCream. Now it makes sense how Herman is supposed to go on as day 1 when you give it to your friends. It will probably get stronger in flavour as the starter is passed to friends as they are already starting with a fermented portion of dough. I'm probably as clear as mud...

Your very welcome nonomix. The starter given to me when I first made the cake had been around a long time,so I know what you meant ;)
See how the cake looks and tastes tomorrow :D

Looking forward to finding out what the cake turns out like CC after all your effort. There could be a lot of Herman's all around the world from this one post :)
