Actually I just checked, I made my first batch on May 26 and the second on August 1. So more like 2 months/9 weeks. I think it started to smell of ammonia about 2 weeks before I gave up on it.

I can't believe it lasted that long with the amount of washing we do...

Mine is in a decor plastic container and a batch lasts me a lot longer than 4-5 weeks - still white though right to the end.  Strange that.  Did you use Sunlight or Velvet - I use Velvet soap.

Oh you use a decor container.  Brilliant idea.  I transferred all my pantry over to tupperware a few years ago and i kept a few decor pour canisters for the shed but i've not used them yet.

The only container I could find yesterday was a 3 litre plastic milk container and i'm not very keen on using that as it might be mistaken for milk.  Although milk being stored on the top shelf of a laundry i would think would be pretty rare.

I'm off to fossick around in my shed for the decor (satans Tupperware).

My pantry is done in 80% Satan's Tupperware  :D :D

I used white soap I bought from Woolies a million years ago, it's Home Brand and just called Pure Soap.

I made some this morning and am just doing the first load of washing as I type. I am very excited to see how this goes as I used to do the other type with the washing crystals and 9 litres of water years ago when I was a fresh and jubilant single parent *lol* how quickly we learn.

I put pink grapefruit essential oil in mine along with 100g of bicarb soda. Will tell you the results when  it's done. :)

I bought some essential oil to use but didn't know how much to put in or whether to put it into the goo or just put it into the washing machine once it has filled up.   Maybe you can answer my question Jessiesgirl.

JD - I've been using a water soluable Lavendar oil from the supermarket which I added directly to the load. However I've had a few oil marks appear on some items lately, which I suspect was from the oil  ??? ??? So next batch I plan to add the oil to the goo first and see if that's a better result.

Result of washing was very good. I put the essential oil into the goo mix with the last addition of water. I am very happy with the result.

Thanks for the easy recipe.

Thanks for that info jessiesgirl.  How much did you use per batch?
