Title: Steam Mops
Post by: mcmich on April 25, 2013, 10:25:16 pm
My Kenwood steam mop has given in after 12yrs and I'm wondering if you have any suggestions or are pleased with what you are using?

I have looked at Choice Magazine and some other reviews and am more confused than ever. The reviews on the newer version of the Kenwood aren't that great so don't think I will go with that again.

I will be very interested to hear what everyone suggests too as my new house is floor boards  ;)

Hi, I used to have a steam mop, it was yellow. But have gone back to the good old basic mop for my floors.

I was considering the enjo mop as well ... this is all new to me as we are going from a house that is full of carpet except the wet areas and kitchen dining to a house that is mainly floorboards  ;D

I bought the latest Bissell steam mop. It was on a recommendation from a friend. Just the basic model that only cleans floors - no fancy attachments. Will give it a test run and let you know what I think of it.  :)

Is a steam mop or cleaner worth having?
There is one advertised constantly here but the reviews are poor.

I only have floor boards and tiles in my house DJ - so for me it is well worth it. On top of that I don't have sewerage ( enviro system) and have to be very careful about what I put down the drains. No chemicals or bleach. Having said that I have had a steam mop for years in other homes and I love the convenience.

I've never used a steam mop, in fact, I never even gave them a thought!  What are they like on tile floors?  I find the normal mop leaves my tiles looking streaky and I hate the look of them after I have washed them down so would like to look at alternatives.

Marina, i use white vinegar in the hot water, and my floors are lean and shiny, no streaks at all.

hi Ladies,
This is the first time i have made a post on this wonderful forum, but i just couldn't help myself.
I use the NATURE DIRECT Mop,  it is the best thing in my house after my thermie.
The mop comes with a spinner to spin the mop to almost dry.
Included is also a super strength solution(chemical free), which will also clean your oven or even BBQ.
not only are your floors clean but dry in a few seconds, depending on how many times you prefer to spin your mop.
The mop is a round shape so it can also spin/roll to clean behind your toilet or along all of your skirting boards.
Works great on all floor types.
I just love it, second best thing is my house, and all 100% natural

That was why I looked at the reviews on steam mops - a lot of them leave streaks. Even with the old Kenwood it left the shiny tiles streaky. The matt finish tiles come up lovely.

I've had a steam mop since they first come out (the old yellow Kenwood) and wouldn't use anything else.

I have both enjo and bissell steam mop.  Use the enjo (or should I say the fabulous cleaning lady) weekly while I use the steam mop every hols and once mid-term through the school year.  I love the efficiency of Enjo and the large mop head makes cleaning all the surfacesI.  i did not like the Kenwood that I owned forever, hardly ever using it - along came Bissell oh it is so much easier to deal with on every floor surface and we have the range from tiles (stipple tile which is a gloss with a ripple type effect through it) to wooden back verandah as well as outdoor tiles on a large front (steam mop is not used on outdoor tiles).  (http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/housework/mopping-smiley-emoticon.gif) (http://www.sherv.net/emoticons.html)

Used the steam mop today. Mixed feelings. Started off fine, I needed to keep my finger on the button for steam. I don't know whether or not you only press for steam occasionally but it became very wet and I had to dry the floors off to prevent streaking. Finished mopping without the steam going and the floors came up well.
It also was a little hard to push and has a very short chord.

I haven't read the instructions though - so maybe I should do that too.  :-))

............the cord is a pain I always use an extension cord. Lately I have taken to attaching the enjo mop head (using gaffer tape - very professional yes!!!!)) as I love how the enjo emoves any tougher marks so combined with the steam I am on a winner!!!!!!!

Robyn, do you have to keep the button on to make steam?

...sorry Michele but that is a definite yes - I only need to refill once when doing our house where all floors except bedrooms get mopped  :)

I was looking at something similar DJ, although you couldn't attach an iron. It was $399.00 and I didn't want to spend that much on a mop. In hindsight????

I didn't wash the cloths before using and wonder whether that was why my floors were left wet? Will give mine another go with a washed cleaning cloth.

I have a steam cleaner and no longer use it after being introduced to Norwex products. I'm not a consultant (wish I had the time to be) but I'd highly recommend their products. If you get a chance, go to a party or better still host your own. The freebies are amazing!

I never liked my steam mop, returned the first one because I said it didn't work properly and the second one was no different  :D  Just me I guess - that one ended up out on the verge for a council pick up.  I don't know what brand it was - it was red, that's all I can remember about it.  I just prefer the old miracle spray and a mop or occasionally the long handled scrubbing brush for a deeper clean.  Of course I have lost my housekeeper now that Geoff is in a home so I have to do my own cleaning these days.

LOL I said the exact same thing Obbie. Since then though I've been to three parties and hosted one of my own!  No need to buy any chemicals and cleaning so much less of a chore.

I haven't been to any sort of a cleaning party - I'm chemical free by force  :'(.  I'm on enviro system, can't use any antibacterials.

Miss the use of bleach - love the smell and results  ;D

Have a look at Norwex. It has silver threaded into the fibre which makes it all anti bacterial. Plus they are really good at cleaning things. I sound like I'm selling the stuff but really I'm not! I just love sharing my discovery of such quality products with people.

I had a look at the Norwex site yesterday and my major problem with the floor mop is that you have to actually remove the cleaning head to rinse it then wring it out by hand then put it back on the cleaning head to continue cleaning the floor.  I already have a mop with this system and it is an absolute b*&#@!^ to use.  I hate it.  There was a microfibre mop mentioned earlier, Nature Direct, that looked easier to use and had a more 'conventional' bucket system I think I would be more inclined towards his one, but everyone has their own preferences and what suits one person may not work for someone else.

Not convinced that a steam mop would be my preferred solution, though - I think I would have to give this a bit more thought.

Thanks

I bought this to clean where we were moving to, and now we are going somewhere else (will still need to clean).
It is fantastic. Brilliant iron, far better than ordinary steam iron and this house is so much cleaner. The 25 yr old kitchen doors are no longer sticky and all the painted doors look marvellous, no longer covered in finger marks and don't need re painting.
When it dies I'll buy another with a bigger tank as refilling means waiting to cool down. But a brilliant thing and revolution to housework. Beware it becomes slightly addictive to clean everywhere and do NOT use on emulsion paint.

We have a steam mop that we bought from Danos direct on the tele. DW loves it and so does the cleaning lady; I'm a mop person. We bought a pack of 5 extra cleaning clothes for it and just change them as they get dirty then bung the whole lot in the washing machine.

Hi Den or anyone else with one of those green steam mops from the TV

May I ask? is your Danoz steam mop still going?? I am tempted to get one but have heard of many that don't last long due to limescale buildup.

Hi GHM, don't know if it helps but mine came with additive to prevent lime scale. Called kalstop

Link shows it here http://www.amazon.co.uk/KALSTOP-LIMESCALE-ITEM-No-GB2-737-SUITABLE-GENERATORS/dp/B006N94U2G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1377009167&sr=8-2&keywords=polti+limescale

Somehow I ended up watching TVSN last night (something I rarely do) and they were promoting a steam mop “Little Yello” I think it was called.  Anyway, I’m not sure that I really want a steam mop per se, but I had a flash of inspiration whilst I was watching this promotion – I wondered whether it would (or could) produce steam direct from the nozzle hot enough to kill weeds!

To all of you who have steam mops, have you ever used yours to do this and, if so, what are your thoughts?  I’d love to get some feedback on this as I have lots of weeds that I would be overjoyed to get rid of in this way – environmentally friendly and saves on a back-breaking chore.

Thank you "Oh Fount Of All Information" ... how on earth did you find that thread, Judy?  It looks interesting, particularly hiring the wall paper stripping machine.  Seems I'm not the only one looking at the steam option.

Don't you just love the way some of our threads jump from the original topic to something completly different in one posting!   :o

Cuilidh,
My Mum was telling me about this one anyhow ....... we did and internet search, found ex demo ones on ebay for $89 (at the time she was going to buy one for nearly $300) and she bought one on ebay. We asked them what the difference was and they use them for a short while, test them package them up and give a warranty. It is the same seller so not a copy.

Mum ordered hers and it arrived and looked brand new ! She's very happy with the saving !

Some of them certainly are, but it is a huge hassle walking in and out to the kitchen and constantly waiting for the kettle to boil every time (I have got A LOT OF WEEDS), that's why I was thinking something like steam would be good.
