Title: Heston Feasts used a thermomix
Post by: containergirl on April 02, 2010, 02:34:04 am
I love a sighting of a thermomix - use 6001 for a thermomix......making a blood and creame custard (from eels).  I think it involved cooking for a long time (being constantly stirred)...the perfect job for a thermomix.

In our house Spanner puts ours to use grinding chook food for our baby chicks when they appear.

I've never heard of him. Eels yuk. I tasted eel for the first time in Singapore the other day. I don't like the after taste much.

Heston Blumenthal.. .owns the FAT DUCK restaurant / experimental kitchen in the UK.
Is known for his 'scientific' approach to cooking. Very interesting. Molecular-gastronomy or whatever is the buzz word these days.

His 'FEASTS' shows feature a theme or time period for a meal set for celebrity guests.
Crazy things like the eel thing.. birds baked in a pie (live birds).. edible cutlery etc etc. That was all for the Medieval Feast.
He has done a Xmas one as well and a few others. Go google.

Agree with you there Gretch!

Cookie, was the eel smoked that you tried?  I grew up on smoked eel as a kid, and still love it!  My Opa had a smoke-house out the back of the orchard, and smoked everything you could imagine.
He used to wash them first in a twin tub washing machine (to get the slime off), then gut them with his thumb nail (which was the strength of steel), then smoke them.  Was delish....but only the skinnier ones.....the fat eels are too oily.

Even I wouldn't eat Heston's eel blood custard......Yuk!  (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sick001.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

I love watching Heston's Feasts!  There is not too much that I am keen on eating though!  I like the show because I am a scientist, who likes to cook, who reads alot of history books (read as "history obsessed").  And I like TMX spotting in the background.

I am lucky enough to have eaten at The Fat Duck and it was the most memorable restaurant experience ever.   Totally amazing food which tickled all the senses, not just taste (and included hearing as well).   The service was perfect as well.

Not sure whether I'd want to go back, purely because it could never be quite as wonderful as the first time.

Yes Maddy I'm pretty sure the eel was smoked.

I have never watched this until last night. DS (number 3 the budding chef) watches all the time and called me in when he saw the TMX. Rewound it for me to watch and then I got sucked into watching and wanting to heave!!!  :o

Somebody gave me he big Fat Duck Cookbook for Christmas.  It has a few TMX uses, but mainly for things like the lamprey eel blood sausage mix.  LOL

One thing to his credit - he USED the butterfly !!!!  unlike a Masterchef who didn't use it for sabayon !

There was an episode in his In Search of Perfection where he "discovered" the Thermomix in a restaurant in Milan.  It was a TM31, so not that long ago.

Oh JD - this is mild.  He feeds them the head and tail of the lamprey eel also, crickets filled with mayonnaise, mock turtle soup (from calf's head), what looks like fruit that is made from meats including bulls testicles, should I go on ??

MrsT said "This is awful, I don't know know how you can watch it and proceeded to gag and nearly vomit."

I really think his cooking is fascinating. The wonder of it is nothing is as it seems. I think it would be best experienced as a once off in his dining room and not the kitchen like Katya. The Medieval show was amazing. I am sure his restaurant is outrageously expensive but what a treat if someone else is footing the bill. Any offers?

Heston was the reason my very overly logical teenage son took on cooking with such fervour last year... he loves how he destructs each recipe!!  :-))

Just as well we all have our own thermomixes to know what goes into them! :D

I've loved reading everyones comments.

The former vegetarian in me does feel decidedly queasy as I watch Heston and his exploits.  Thursday night was a big night of TV for inducing queasiness- starting with a stuffing made on Italian Food Safari which included unborn eggs.   Not sure why I should feel queasy if I am going to eat flesh and it is edible.

That was the Pudda a Taccula I though it was to  die for and I could almost smell it. LOL! Eventually the unborn eggs did get cooked. Nothing like that in Cairns.

I'm with you containergirl!  I just can't watch those bits... but watching it on the SBS Television site means I can fast forward through those bits without seeing them...  ;)

Lots of people (?Jews included) treasure the "unborn" eggs.  They are just yolks without much white and no shell.

He is extremely clever, driven and quite mad probably! But I still enjoy watching his show. I loved the Christmas one where he puzzled for days as to how he could incorporate myrrh into his meal. He ended up using the wood as forks as everything food he tried to make with myrrh was nasty tasting.

He's on TV tonight doing a program themed around Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.  Apparently he has the guests licking the wallpaper - can't wait to see it  :D

Good to think of the eggs like that.  We are funny creatures the way we construct our beliefs.  It is good to use as much of an animal as you can if you are going to kill it......intellectually I believe this but then I find the reality confronting sometimes.  I reckon Spanner and Spanner Junior might just give it a go with this seasons meat chooks.

Which channel is the chocolate special on?   It sounds great.

I reckon Spanner Junior could be a bit like Ceejay's son....good to know the house and thermomix survive.  The thermomix combines his favourite things food and a power tool!  He made us 'soup' out of a curry the other week.  Enthusiastically arrived at the thermomix before me and turned it up to 10 instead of off...oh well he isn't 3 yet!  He did go through a short season of chasing the cat with a butter knife after last years meat chooks. ;)

The chocolate special was on Channel 4 last night - you can catch it on the 4OD website if you missed it.   It was reviewed in this morning's Guardian and I'm definitely going to be watching it.

Maybe because they are now selling the program overseas?

Yes - so you don't know who won the Australian Masterchef - unless you trawl thru the old pages  ;) ;) ;) - find the winner hidden in old posts and see if you can win some bets with friends - good odds early on  ;D ;D
