Title: Just can't get enough of fresh fruit!!
Post by: Amy :-) on May 15, 2012, 01:44:53 pm
Is it just me, or is there so much delicious fresh fruit around right now? :D :D

We have apples, bananas, pears, mandarins, grapes.... yummo!! I can't get enough of it ;D

So what's your favourite fruit? And whats your favourite fruit dish?
I am looking for ideas for some yummy, healthy desserts using some of this wonderful fresh fruit.

Robyn, please don't mention lemons or you will make me jealous :-))

My favourite fruit is persimmon which is only available for a short time each year.  I do have a pack of puree in the freezer but generally I just love to eat them as they are Amy.  I am often disappointed these days with the quality of 'fresh' fruit, some of the stone fruit is no good to eat by the time it has ripened and I have thrown so much away that I rarely buy them now.
If I have too much of any type of fruit I usually google 'recipes for persimmons' for example and that takes me to some lovely recipes. I print them out and then rarely do them LOL because I just prefer eating fruit as it is.  I do an upside down plum cake which I love as it is so simple and only needs a few plums, plus apple pies - just the normal old fashioned type recipes, nothing fancy.

QFITM has some lovely dessert ideas with fresh fruit. I find the day just flies and I haven't eaten any fruit, so I don't feel guilty if I can have a dessert or cake with fruit in it...thats my excuse  :D

For me, nothing beats a good mango.  I love mango sorbet and mango lassi / smoothie.

My family eats lots of fruit. A bag of apples are gone in no time, bananas don't last more than a couple of day. Strawberries and raspberries are a favorite. Grapes, oranges, peaches, mandarins, rock melon, cantaloupe, watermelon, apricots. And the list goes on.
I think you can't go past a fresh grit salad either on it's own or served with Icecream or custard. Yum yum.

I'm not entirely sure that Lassis and Smoothies are the same, Fundj.  I have just always thought of them as being that way.  I think people often add lots of other things to Smoothies whereas a Lassi has fewer ingredients.  Probably someone else will come up with a more definitive answer, but, until then, they are both pretty much the same to me!

To much fruit is not always good either. I know a family that brought a house with a huge orchard with lots of varieties of fruit. Their kids ate so much fruit they started getting cavities in their teeth because of all the natural sweeteners in fruit :(
But we do love our fruit :)

My favourite fruits are mangos, bananas and pink lady apples.  Once during my working days my boss laughingly asked me to sit outside and eat my mango as it was making such a mess.

:o I didn't even know that was possible! OMG thats going to be me soon... but maybe since they were children they still had some soft baby teeth? I hope thats it anyway :-\

Lassis are a traditional Indian drink ;) I've never had one but I've heard they are quite a particular taste.

If my mum had fed me grit salad when I child I would definitely have had more cavivites. Or at least broken teeth :-))

I can't say I've ever had a persimmon. I must try one!!! :D

Amy, Lassis are easy - I just combine mango (or whatever other fruit), plain unflavoured yoghurt and water with ice and whizz them up together.

Don't they traditionally have cardamom in them as well? ???

Possibly, I really don't know for sure.  The ones I make have always been fairly plain.  I think some people may even put salt in them.  I'm sure if you Googled Lassi you would get some better ideas than anything I can come up with.

I haven't been googling much since I found this forum :-)) There are so many knowledgable and experienced members, I like to ask questions and take advice from here. I hope nobody minds ???

I might have to google Lassis though ;)

After googling Lassis, I think I mght just stick to mango smoothies ;D

Judy, I hope you see this. I just bought 2 persimmons at Woolworths (they only had 4!!) but I'm not sure how to tell if they are ripe. Can you help me out please? :-*

they should be very soft. i eat them with a spoon yum  ;D

Yes, they certainly must be ripe.  You sometimes have to buy them and just look at them for a few days until they soften slightly, I don't like them as soft as Uni obviously does. I just peel and slice one then go back for another.  Don't share it with the kids, they might like them too and you won't get any.  I told GS he wouldn't like them but unfortunately he did  :-))

Hm...they are quite firm. I think I should probably leave them for a few days. Does their colour change at all?

Dried fruit! Yum! Have you tried dried strawberries cookie? ;D

I got watermelon today...yummmmmmmmy :D

I think my persimmons are still unripe. I am a bit worried that I will either cut it too soon or too late and then have to throw it out :-\

Pink lady apples are very cheap here at the moment so I have been buying up big and drying them until they become brittle.  My daughter is eating them like chips (so is my mother).  I've had to buy more trays for my dehydrator to keep up with them.

Mines 20 years old this year and has been used for everything from beef jerky to yoghurt drops.  I go through phases of not using it but it has done a lot of work lately as I found mushrooms for 3.99 a kilo, onions for 49c a kilo and the pink lady apples.  The mushrooms were great because they are really quick to slice using an egg slicer and I love throwing a handful of them in a casserole.  I made a quick vegetable soup yesterday by grabbing a handful of mushrooms, and other dried vegetables and dumping them in the multicooker with some chicken stock.  Took all of 1 minute to do.  My biggest problem is getting the dried product into vacuum bags and sealed before my daughter eats it.....she has discovered dried zucchini and mushrooms taste good.  I'm currently drying some beef jerky.

Bought some beautiful 'Honey Pears" at the farmers market and have just made a Walnut and Pear cake,  converted to TMX.  Will post if OK.  There real name is Winter Neilis and a 2 k. bag was $5.

They were lovely! I can't believe I've never had them before. One of them had some little dark spots in the flesh, but I took a little bite first and didn't keel over, so I don't think it was off. And I couldn't resist eating it anyway, tooooooooo yummy :D

Oh no! :'( Have you tried freezing them Judy?

Yes, I bought some very ripe ones last year and I still have a pack of the puree in the freezer.  Would be nice to add to plain yoghurt or over ice-cream. I'd cut any dark spots out before eating them Amy, did you peel them - I do.

Excellent! I just hope Woolworths have more when I go tomorrow. They only had 4 last time I was there :-\

Yoghurt and persimmon puree sounds yummy :D

Yes, I did peel them Judy. It was actually quite fun learning about a new fruit. I was really excited cutting into the first one because I had no idea what it would look like inside.

I would have cut the dark spots out, but they were tiny and there were lots of them and I just wanted to eat my yummy persimmon... :)

I have never been able to get my head around eating fruit with cheese... ??? I always had cheese in savoury dishes and fruit in sweet dishes, so I couldn't figure out how they would work together. What sort of fruit do you eat with cheese JB?

Amy, apples and grapes are the more usual fruits to serve with cheese, together with quince paste as suggested by fundj.  Cheese and biscuits can be quite dry on their own.  If I have cubes of cheese in a salad I find that pomegranates seeds sprinkled over top are a nice addition.

JB

This may be a dumb question (I'm a pro at those ;)) but how do you serve it? Do you just get a chunk of cheese and a whole grape and put them in your mouth at once? Or would you cut the grapes in half and maybe arrange them on little bits of cheese? I'm guessing you just slice the apple and layer it with a slice of cheese?
Title: Re: Just can't get enough of fresh fruit!!
Post by: judydawn on May 21, 2012, 12:19:41 pm
I usually put a piece of quince paste onto a piece of cheese and eat it that way Amy but with with the other fruit on a platter I eat them separately to the cheese. Cheese can leave a dryness in the mouth and the juicy fruit is the complete opposite.  That's just me though - others may be different.
Title: Re: Just can't get enough of fresh fruit!!
Post by: Amy :-) on May 21, 2012, 12:30:36 pm
Ahh, I think I see. They are served together as a contrast? As you say Judy, the dryness of the cheese with the cripness and juiciness of the fruit? That would make sense....

I just tried grapefruit for the first time and it was disgusting! It was very bitter and didn't seem to have any flavour underneath the bitterness. Are all grapefruits like this? If they are, how are you supposed to eat them? ???
Title: Re: Just can't get enough of fresh fruit!!

I've never eaten grapefruit Amy - goodness knows what you do with it.  I do know you cannot eat or drink the juice if you are on Lipitor though but there is no chance of me ever doing that when I know through others how bitter they are.

Grapefruit varies a lot in how tart they are. The orange/red ones are sweeter but some people sprinkle sugar over them or cut them in to segments and mix with other fruit. They are yum once you get used to them.

I went on that stupid grapefruit diet in the seventies :-)) :-)) Like all fruits you can get good and bad quality of grapefruit. If you're game to try again Amy try a Rubyred Grapefruit as they tend to be sweeter. :)

Cut the grapefruit in 1/2.  Cut segments into each half,  sprinkle with sugar and brandy. Serve in the 1/2 cup.  Was a popular starter in the dim dark ages.  Quite nice.

Yes, my eyes definitely opened djinni373! :-))

I don't know if its worth me trying to acquire the taste? There doesn't seem to be much you can do with them. The sugar and brandy idea sounds nice Chookie, but I refuse to put any alcoholic beverage in my body. Just one of my personal rules. Are grapefruits something you would do the cheese thing with?

How on Earth CC, did you manage on a diet of these things!? I couldn't even manage one mouthful. I spat it out :P

Maybe I should just stick to persimmons. I've gone mad on them Judy. There were 10 on the fruit bowl on Thursday, and now there is 1. Where could they be...? :-))

I'm certainly trying Judy! Woolies and Coles never seem to have many though ???
At Woolies they charge $1.98 each, so a bit more expensive than your Farmer's market! There is only a Farmer's market once a week where I live, and it is quite small. I'd be very lucky to get there in time to get the good produce :P

Yes, I did freak out a bit when I realised how much they were costing me. But they are just so yummy! :D I can't believe I'd never had them before you told me about them. I will be forever grateful to you Judy :-*
Since we are on the topic of persimmons, I have also noticed that the ones I buy in Woolies don't have seeds, but the ones from Coles do. Are there different types of persimmons?
Title: Re: Just can't get enough of fresh fruit!!
Post by: judydawn on May 28, 2012, 01:37:25 am
There are apparently astringent and non-astringent varieties of persimmons Amy but I've read countless articles about them and it's  all very confusing to me. The only short answer I came up with regarding the seeded variety is "no seeds = no pollination" but whatever they have or don't have, I just love them.  Naturally I would prefer no seeds and more flesh but you take what you can get as there is no way of knowing what's inside.  Have a google of the fruit yourself and see if you can make any sense from it, it goes way over my head
