Seed topping for Bread
« on: February 25, 2010, 11:34:21 am »
This mix is very tasty.  It can be added to the basic bread recipe,  or used to line the tin or roll uncooked rolls in it.

I make the mix  X 4,  and keep in a jar,  and use as required.

1 Tablespoon of oats
1/4 cup of sesame seeds
1 1/2 dessertspoons of poppy seeds
2 dessertspoons of aniseed seeds
1 1/2 teaspoons of fennel

Is that measurement the dessert spoon that is equal to  two  US teaspoons
OR
the dessert spoon that is equal to 3/4 of a US teaspoon?

I found two different measurement conversion on two different websites a while back when I was searching for it but that was before I joined this forum  and  didn't have a good place to ask.

Andi, this Tablespoon measure is equal to 4 teaspoons.    When i make this up, I often put more oats in as I mostly use it to line bread tins.
Andi,  thanks for the question for it reminds me that i probably should specify in Grams.   I think the recipe was American ,  and went with a sour dough bread recipe which is similar to the Bible Bread on the Forum.   This mix gives a lovely crunchy coating when cooked,  I think it is the mix of flavors.   If you try it I would be interested to know what you think.

I know about the difference between the US and Australian tablespoon measures.  It is the  dessertspoon measurements that confuse me.

Sorry, the dessertspoon is 1/2 the tablespoon,  or 2 teaspoons.

Sounds like my favorite soup spoon - an antique with a perfectly round bowl that is twice as deep as other soup spoons.
The Victorians liked their viands!
