I just had a thought that some of the noise amplification may come from what is under the thermomix, i.e. a big fairly open space like a cupboard, this may pick up the noise and amplify it (like a sound system speaker does). Have you tried moving it to and using it in a different part of the kitchen / house with a different 'mass' under it to help sound absorption?

I don't have a soundproof room in our house Marina but if I did, that is where the TMX would live as far as DH is concerned.

I love the idea of a silicone mat. As mine is on our stone bench top, I find it quite noisy at times. The silicone mat (if big enough) could be removed and washed as regularly as you like, saving my lovely stone bench top.
As for kids, my DS7 who has ADHD is defianetly more louder and messier than my thermie. Sometime I turn the thermie on just to block out DS7 noise LOL
I often refer to DS7 as a tornado. He makes a lot of noise and leaves destruction everywhere, but like my thermie, I can not live without him.

Mine is noisy as well - the whole house complains about it.
I just tell them if they want the cakes and the rest of the good stuff they have to suck it up.
To be honest I dont use the beast for rice. Too messy. I stick a cup of rice in a deep dish with 1 and 3/4 cups of water and mic it for 13 mins. Fluff up at the end. Perfect rice every time with hardly any mess.

No, I don't either and cooking it in conjunction with steamed vegies is using the TMX to it's fullest capabilities.

To be honest I havent done steamed rice in the TM only the apricot risotto. If I am not using the TM for anything else that night I would just mic it. For example I cook a lot of indian food which I freeze. If I am just getting a couple of curries out of the freezer for tea I would just mic the rice rather than have to clean the beast.

I don't mind but yes it's very noisy. Damn these open plan houses with no door for the kitchen. Look at these

Actually Cuilidh has a point. It could be being magnified by the benchtop and cupboard underneath. I would put it on the floor and turn it on to see if it is any quieter. If so, you may have to fence off a section of your kitchen for it

Bet they don't have one yet for the Thermomix, it would have to be pretty big. Nice to see other appliances are considered too noisy though. I'm OK with the noise too but do occasionally put my fingers in my ears and always warn DH I am about to grate cheese or something if he is nearby.
