Is your TM noisy?

Hi there,

I am relatively new to TM, I have had mine for a few months and really love it, but I am finding it quite noisy, to the point where my husband doesn't want to be in the kitchen/living room when it is operating.

I must admit, now that he has drawn my attention to it I can really notice it, it's like the motor sound just constantly grinding away.

Does this sound normal or could mine be faulty?

I wouldn't bother steaming rice or anything else that takes a while as I don't want to be listening to it for that amount of time!

It's starting to get me down a bit.

What  do you think?

it could be faulty, i steam rice  3 times a week and its fine wiil take notice of the sound it makes tomorrow

Hi PaulaM, welcome to the forum.  The TMX is rather loud but are you saying yours had gotten louder than it was when you first got it.  If you have a consultant nearby, perhaps ask them to come and listen to it.  My DH hates the noise it makes too but he just has to learn to live with it because it is not going anywhere   If he is in the same room as the TMX, I will warn him when I am about to chop or make excessive noise - he soon leaves. We could never have an open plan lounge/dining room/kitchen set up - he would hate it.

For things like making cake and biscuits, it actually makes LESS noise that the mixer, and for a shorter time, so I prefer to use it instead of the mixer. For rice, it is noisier than the rice cooker, but I put my tm outside when it's cooking so the steam dissipates outside and I don't need to use the exhaust (less carbon footprint). For the most part, everything is done fairly quickly, and quicker than by any other appliance, so the length of noise is less. I think your husband notices it because you use it more than you would anything else (because it is so easy to use).

Thanks so much for the replies, my consultant has heard it and does think it is a little noisier than hers. She thinks it is due to the acoustics in my kitchen? Maybe?

It hasn't gotten any louder since I have had it, it has always been the same. I would have just put up with it other than DH drawing my attention to it so many times!

My consultant has suggested I take it to her house so we can compare them side by side, I will do this as I am really interested to know now whether this is normal or not!

Well I am about to attempt Beef Rendang so fingers crossed!

Hi Paula. I guess mine is loud but we have got used to it. Just like Judy if I am going to make lots of loud noise I warn DH. We have a very large, open kitchen/dining/family so I think that is why mine sounds loud.

Thanks CreamPuff63, I found those threads! I must have an updated EDC book as mine already has only 150g Coconut Milk and no water. I am cooking it at the moment (trying not to listen to it!) it smells WONDERFUL, can't wait to eat it!

Well, it's always going to be noisier than a saucepan on a stove. That's just the way it is. You get used to it.

I'm not sure if this would work, but perhaps you could put a silicone or rubber mat under your TMX and that may work as a noise absorber - but, if you try this, whatever you do, make very sure that it has a sticky surface, otherwise you may have a disaster in the making if your TMX is unsteady or 'walks' off your bench top.  Generally my TMX is fine, noise wise, but if I am going up past 8 I use noise reducing headphones now and they really make a difference.  You can still hear the TMX, but the noise is more subdued (I think the headphones cut out the upper register) it certainly makes it much more comfortable to use the TMX at higher speeds - I don't have to stick my fingers in my ears to make it more bearable to work alongside during those "noisy" moments!

I am a positive person and I think of the noises as Thermie singing.  He is vocal, no doubt about it.  I don't have children but I often think it may be better than a screaming child.  At least Thermie only sings for about 10 seconds at a time, doesnt need bribing or rewarding and can easily be switched off and silenced on command.  Who can say that after a few seconds of screaming, can a child produce beautiful icing sugar?

Oh Lee, the noise is much better than a screaming child, believe me   The TMX does as it's told and is ready & willing to oblige at any time.  Children are great too - but not when they scream or throw tantrums

Absolutely Judy, I am a teacher after all.  Children are awesome. But I like the fact that I can turn Thermie off when I am done with him rather than wait for him to fall asleep after a story, a drink, a wee, another story and a nightmare!

My Thermo Chef is also noisy at some tasks.  It is hard to push buttons with your fingers in your ears.   My Laundry is just off my kitchen with a door in between.  I am thinking of leaving a space on my laundry bench for times when the extended cooking time may affect our conversation or T.V. viewing.
