Hally, our ham is in about 1 kilo pieces. Freezes well.

we also claim our high electricity as our workshop is at home.
3 freezers is nothing, compared to running welders, pumps. ;)

At last I have come in well under budget - only because I was too ill to go to the market yesterday!  Sent DH off to the supermarket to get fruit, etc. with $50.00 and we will be living on my stores from the freezer for the rest of the week.  Bit of a beggar being unwell today as it's our 35th anniversary and I was hoping to treat ourselves out to a nice restaurant for a change - hopefully I'll be better by the end of the week and we can go out for my birthday instead!

Happy 35th anniversary Cuilidh. Hope you feel better soon.

I have started a thread here for Cuilidh's anniversary - JD

Jakodai, thanks, I will get dh to give me the info then I will calculate.

Quite interested in a porky pig. Love pork.

Dede, 30gs for a whoe pig, i thought they were much bigger than that :o

Is the ham like christmas ham?

Get well soon, such a waste if time being sick. Well done on the budget :)

I like the dea of having a different account for food & to see the moey saved. I dont do that as we ave the revolving line.of credit on our mortgage.

Ths week is the end if June, so I am hoping to be in budget again.

I am now going to adopt this new way of shopping each week, its great to see spaces in the fridge, freezer & pantry. Also nice to open the pantry door & not have it fall out on top of you.

Halex a pig can be as big as you want. We choose to have a 30kg one as we don't like them too big. The roasts on a 30kg pig would be an average size ham size I would say.

You don't  just get a ham when you get a pig . A leg of Pork  has to be processed into a ham.  Cured and smoked or brined or whatever to get that flavour.

H have you ever bought a leg of pork? Shoulder of pork? That is fresh ham. This is how to make a ham ham.

Ham ham. Haven't heard of that.  ;D

I spent $141.50 this week, so $16 over. So far, $31 over budget. I never was good at budgeting... :(
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

Wow Gert, cant wait  5 years for a ham!!!!

Think its easier to buy ham & I suppose bacon is the same as  ham.

I think I woud use all the meat on a side of porkers.

Thanks Gert

Did rather a big shop today seeing as I didn't shop last week so, not surprisingly, I am over.  $22.22 at Farmer Jo's and $95.79 at Foodland making a total of $117.01.  If it wasn't DH's birthday later this week, I could have quite easily stayed within budget but we will be having family for a meal at some stage.

I have chosen a few recipes for this week , made sure I had all the ingredients and hopefully will in fact do the following in no particular order.  I tend to go as the day dictates.

Lemon risotto with asparagus and broad beans
Mexican Bake
Slow roasted turkey drumsticks with vegies
Stuffed chicken fillets

I need to make an amendment to my weekly total. Thought it was $49.68 although DH said he bought a tile cutter in with the Aldi shop. That was $29.90 so my total on food, cleaning products and toiletries was $19.78. Yah best week I've had so far.
Need to do a decent shop this week though.

I went to Farmer Joes today too Judy.  Did you buy one of those green cauliflowers they had (cauli broc I think it was called)?  We did, it will be interesting to see whether it tastes any different to normal cauliflower.

You have to splash out for DH's birthday  :D
