Crumpets - In the Mix
« on: June 04, 2012, 02:36:54 am »
I wouldn't bother making these again. They were OK, but I actually prefer the bought ones! Perhaps if my egg rings were larger and higher they would have been worth it. But they were quite small. The time it took to cook them all really meant that they actually work out far more expensive than bought ones.

I admire Jeff Brady for his clever recipe development and adore his Quince Paste recipe, but I'm giving crumpets the thumbs down for being time consuming and expensive.
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

They look good though MJ.  Personally I think some recipes are just to prove that we can make them ourselves but who has the time to make every single thing we need on a daily basis.  There is a life out of the kitchen.

Is this Jeff Brady, the famous Thermomixer?  If so I downloaded a copy of his crumpet recipe a long time ago but haven't tried it yet.  I remember it got rave reviews on the forum at the time.  Now I wonder ... will I give them a try (one day when I have time?).

they look lovely MJ. I agree with you. I made them once, and because of the time factor wouldn't make them again. I also thought they tasted and resembled big fat pancakes. Mine didn't have many holes, but yours do look like crumpets and look very delish.

Yours look very good MJ, but totally agree on what you are saying.  I made the recipe about 2 years or so ago but wasn't impressed at all in how they tasted.  Some times shop bought things do taste better, not often, but sometimes.  :)

They did taste nice, but weren't thick enough. I could only put about 1/2 cm of batter in the rings as they rose so much. They were a lot softer than bought crumpets.

JD, that's so right about the challenge of being able to make something. I've made croissants, which I wouldn't bother with again and puff pastry, again easier to buy! It's just nice to know that I can do it!

I have made these a couple of times.  There are a couple of tricks to them You need metal rings,  large ones,  and the pan needs to be just the right temp.  I agree that they don't taste exactly like the bought ones.  They also,  as all say,  are very time consuming.  I think it is just the challenge of being able to make them.  The same with the English Muffins.   MJ yours look good so you won't have to bother again ;D

We love these  :D :D just to be different lol.

Then again we can not have the bought ones in the house as DS4 reacts so badly to the nasties that are in them. We let him have on at Nanna's the other week as she wanted them used up and hoped that perhaps he may have outgrown his reactions ... NOOOO!!  :-)) :-))

I make them and freeze them, they freeze really well, I have also purchased crumpet rings from the kitchen shop to make them  :) Not so time consuming when you have the crumpet rings as you make bigger ones and less of them. These are a weekend brekky for us  :D
