MC rule of thumb?
« on: June 06, 2012, 08:00:49 am »
Hi Ladies

Hope this finds you all well- sorry to be only popping on for questions and small contributions at the moment! Loving my TMX! Just wondering, is there a general rule of thumb with the MC as to whether you leave it in the lid or remove to let the steam escape during cooking?

I am currently cooking a curry that I found here http://themixingsessions.wordpress.com/ and unsure about whether to leave the MC in place or not? Any advantages either way?

Thanks again.

CGL  ;D

Really? I usually leave mine on, never had a problem. Maybe it depends on the rice...

Mine usually froths as well -  I just put the steaming basket on top instead of the MC.

I always leave my MC on when cooking rice. It only usually froths if I accidently put too much water in :-))

I read the other day that if you turn the speed up a bit it helps to stop the overflowing froth.  Haven't tried it yet, but an interesting concept.

I always leave the MC on with rice as well- as Judy says, you can also turn the steaming basket upside down and use that instead which I have done a couple of times only if I'm making a large quantity of rice.

I read (probably on here  ;)) that the frothing is because of the amount of starch in the rice, so if you wash it really thoroughly it shouldn't froth as much. I have noticed a difference when I wash mine thoroughly-not nearly as much frothing. Did you wash it cooking-good-looking?

Hi Bubbles,

Washed it quite thoroughly and weighed and measured water and rice too! A bit of frothing is acceptable for such perfect rice! :)

When cooking rice I do the wash (speed 5 for a couple of seconds a couple of times), return to speed 4. Add half a teaspoon of oil through the lid and pop the MC in place. The oil stops the frothing that can be quite messy ("pouring oil on troubled waters")
