I will update you with photos of Amy as she grows (even the very ugly stages) until she turns into a beautiful cockatiel :)

Awesome! You should make an Amy the Cockateil thread just for your photos Mandi ;D

When will you be able to tell if she's actually a girl? :-))

The only way I will tell is by having her DNA tested, or wait till she is around 6 months old.
I have to pluck about 3 feathers from her tail or wings and send off for DNA testing which is 100% accurate. But still can't do that till she has all her feathers in about 4 weeks :)

Plucking her feathers sounds mean though... :(

Trust me they do get uglier before they are cute. Not like a chicken that is so cute as soon as they hatch and dry :D

Good grief. I don't think Amy will like that  after just growing them! Is it expensive to get DNA on a bird? I suppose breeders  do it  all the time. Hopefully they will  soon develope a home testing kit for  such DNA.

It's not to bad Gert, only $14 per bird, you get a little certificate for each bird that is DNA tested.

You can also do a blood test by pricking their leg to get a drop of blood out, think the feather test is easier, and the birds really don't feel much as its pretty quick and easy.
Mind you the first time I did it I didn't read the instruction properly and out I went and caught the bird I wanted tested and pulled some feathers from its belly which was really easy and not to stressful. I put the feathers in a zip lock bag and started filling in the paper work which read in big letters BREAST FEATHERS ARE NOT SUITABLE oops :o
So I had to go back out and pull some feathers from the birds wing. :D

Well, the feather test does sound easier than the blood test provided you get the right feathers :-)) ;D

I love weiros or cockatiels. We have a pet one who is quite a chatter box.  He is very loved.

I had to google weiros as I have never heard of them before. Didn't even know I owned some weiros until today lol :D

I love my Sun conure as well, although I'm scared of the noise he is supposed to make. Not sure if I will keep him or sell him once he's weaned.
I'm also getting 2 green cheek conures next week to hand rear. Wonder if I can toilet train them too before I sell them? Worth a try.
Would you buy a hand reared bird that come toilet trained? I know I would lol :D

Morning/evening all.

The things we learn on here, quite fantastic.

What is the masculine of Amy if it turns out to be male?....... :P
