I love Alan Bennett. All his stuff, plays stories and loved The Madness of King George.

Didn't Alan Bennet also write several monologues for TV some years back? He is such an amazing writer; must try to get The Uncommon Reader. I am also reading If Walls Could Talk, really fun and interesting as well as being a very easy read.

The Uncommon Reader is not a new work. Bennet is quite a prolific writer and I am sure many of us would know his essays, books , plays, TVs and movies he has had a hand in.

Not actually a book but is anyone following SErial - This American Life podcasts? It's been recommended to my by a few people and I think it might be the number 1 podcast at the moment. I've downloaded the first 8 episodes but haven't had a chance to listen yet.

It was a case bought to the attention of one of the producers of This American Life (one of the top podcasts in USA) about an American guy of Pakistani heritage who is currently in jail for supposedly murdering his Korean girlfriend. The case has so many holes in it that they decided to do a Podcast (with 12 episodes) about the case - fascinating listening to the different perspectives. One week you think he is guilty and next week you think definitely not. It has created so much interest in the social media. Just type in serial podcast and you should get it. Listen from Episode 1.

I've just finished The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. I didn't like it at first but then enjoyed it.

I enjoyed that one cookie. He was abit like Forrest Gump in that he just kept walking. It was a lightt read that is not mentally draining.

Oh how I've missed this thread! I always find some good suggestions for my next read. I went through a 'heavy reading' stage for a while there, Bring Up The Bodies, then All the Light We Cannot See, then The Goldfinch. Enjoyed them all but needed something light so I've just emerged after gorging myself on Nancy Mitford. Re-read Love in a Cold Climate, then Don't Tell Alfred, then went back & re-read The Pursuit of Love which I only read about a year ago. Now I've downloaded a biography of the Mitford sisters but might go onto something else for a while

My sister sent me a secondhand copy of The Diary of a Farmer's Wife 1796-1797 published by Penguin for my birthday.
It's very interesting, so many aspects of farm life are the same over two hundred years later. I am only on page 42 as it is is slow to read with olde fashioned language and spelling. DH is queuing to read it already.
I recommend it to those who are interested in farming and social history.

I would imagine it to be quite a valuable book DJ.
I'm reading JD Robb's latest. Trying to get it finished as I know there are books under the tree for me.

I was totally addicted to Serial - feel a bit lost now that it's over.
Currently reading a very easy read called Korma, Kheer & Kismet - about the street food of Old Delhi.
Quick & enjoyable.

DJ, this sounds such an interesting book, just up your alley! It will be good to read how things have changed or not changed through the years. I was given a cookbook awhile back that is 93 years old. Still in quite good condition and it makes a great read.

I was lucky and received three books for my e-reader for Christmas.
The Road Back by Di Morrissey
It Started with Paris by Cathy Kelly; and
Hello from the Gillespies by Monica McInerney.
Plenty to read there.
