Supplies - Where?
« on: July 13, 2012, 02:25:27 am »
Hello everyone  :)

I have just purchased my Thermy and expect delivery of it next week (yippee!).

I have never been much of a cook before so am starting to gather information about where to buy supplies (and what I need).

The thing I am most confused about is what do I need for bread!?

I see so many recipes for bread using 'baker's flour', 'heavy flour', 'grind your own grains' and I am very confused!?

Where do you buy your breadmaking ingredients in bulk (online suggestions would be great) and what do I actually need?

I will mainly be trying to make normal loaves, rolls, pizza bases etc. to start with, and we prefer wholewheat (and sometimes spelt) products when we buy our bread currently.

Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I don't use bakers flour, I just use plain wholemeal flour.  I actually buy mine in a 12.5 kg bag from a wholesale distributor where I live, so can't help with online, but I would say most places would have something similar.

I get grains, flours etc from  http://santostrading.com.au/ . . they've always been very friendly and helpful. .  .

I also use the large bags of Bakers Flour you can find in the supermarkets . . .

Sorry I just use the large bags of Bakers Flour or some premixes from the supermarket.

Where do you live ? Most big supermarkets have flour that is suitable for baking.  I buy 10 K at a time.  I buy white Laucke Bread Mix and then add whatever I fancy,  No loaf is ever the same. I grind the seed and grains in the TMX and  replace 100g of the flour in the recipe with the ground mix. I also have small bags of many other flours which I use .
My suggestion would be to start with a simple basic recipe and develop from there,  once you have an understanding of how the yeast works.
We have many beginning bread bakers on the Forum,  who are very generous with help.
Keep asking questions,  and most of all ,  have fun.

I just buy 5kg bags of white baker's flour  from the supermarket & sometimes bread mixes. Costco sell 10kg bags of flour if you need something bigger.

I buy my flour directly from the flour mill in Launceston. I usually buy the 12.5kg bags. Much cheaper than the supermarket. :)

Hi jacqamann, firstly may I welcome you to the forum. I have moved it to the Introduce Yourself section seeing as it is your first post - this way you can get the answers you need as well as being welcomed to the forum.
I just buy 5 kg packs of ordinary bread flour from the supermarket but hopefully you can find somewhere local to buy your wholemeal or spelt bread in bulk.  Perhaps if you tell the girls where you live, someone from that area may have an idea or two.

Not sure where you are but I buy my flour at Marg and Marees in Heidelberg. I think they have an online store as well.

And welcome.
