fresh yeast has gone liquid
« on: July 17, 2012, 06:22:54 am »
HELP PLEASE....

I bought some fresh yeast for the first time.  The shop had put it in plastic containers and frozen it.  She told me to defrost it in the fridge then put in suitable weights and refreeze.  When it defrosted it turned to a brown liquid.  Is this normal???  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Nikki

I had this happen to me too. I didn't like the look of it and threw it out. BUT please wait for someone wiser than me when it comes to fresh yeast. :D

Why would you be told to thaw it out then refreeze it - certainly not keen on that idea.  I'd let the lady in the shop know her advice didn't work Nikki otherwise there are going to be a lot of unhappy customers.

Thanks so much.....

i thought the same as you all and threw it out and used dry yeast.  I am still keen to try fresh yeast but maybe i will try a different shop and see how i go...

Thanks again,

Nikki

I have had the same thing happen to me.  I was told by the lady at the health shop that the yeast would freeze and when I thawed it out it turned to liquid.  I purchased some more fresh yeast and have decided to try again following the instructions on this site.  Have two small packets of yeast & flour in the freezer and will give an update when I use them, hopefully it will work.

I'll be interested to see how it goes. I haven't been able to buy fresh yeast for quite a while. Now there are so many people doing their own bread it should be more readily available.

Oh my goidness.. No expert but use frsh yeast alot and if it went liquid i would throw it.. Also unless you have alot of it you can keep it sealed in the fridge for a couple of weeks without a problem..i buy it in 100g lots from a bakery.. As its a solid paste the fact that its gone liquid would concern me ..

Tried my yeast and flour mix today.  Took from freezer and mixed with a little sugar and water.  Then left and this is the result

Thanks suzanne, I was very pleased with the results.
Cookie, it worked well.  I can buy compressed yeast from the health shop in town and won't hesitate to freeze it with the flour again.  I think I will order a larger block next time as sometimes when you go to get it, they have sold out.  This way will have some on hand all the time.
