Arrived Melbourne today and here until Thursday.
Been here many times and enjoyed the food but would be interested in trying new places.
Any recommendations would be welcome.
Love all cuisines
Thanks MF

We love lots of places in Melb to eat.
The rock pool is good as is his tapas bar next door. Love no.8 at south bank, one of our fav places to eat.
There is a hotel where upstairs does cheap tapas but good, its over the road from the railwy station, cheap & cheerful or lunch after shopping.
So much choice & good value
Enjoy

Yes we took ds to the tapas no problems.
Authentic italian pizza, pizza napoli in russel street, just like being in Italy. Very small, but pizzas taste of real italy.
Chinese in China Town, fantastic but we dont remeber name, sorry, but full of chineese.

Hally you know Melbourne better than me!!! Chins town is littleBourke St, just look for restaurants that are full of Asians and you can't go wrong. We ate at Hellenic Republic last week for Saturday lunch and loved it, would be suitable for kids but not sure if you could get in at short notice and it's a little ut of the city.

If we were to go back to Melb dh says no.8 & pizza napoli a must. When we ate there it bought back the memories of real italian pizzas. Like I said a very small place, the owners bought with them their pizza oven from italy many years ago.
Enjoy, the shopping too

That's my kind of place. Will definitely go there and GS loves pizza.
So do I but only authentic Italian style or fake Fladen style

I agree wonder, Hally knows more about Melbourne restaurants than us locals! I don't go out for dinner much & tend to stay close to home in the inner suburbs rather than the city. If you like Vietnamese, Victoria street in richmond is packed with Vietnamese restaurants - cheap & cheerful. Wagamama has a couple of locations in the city, family friendly but not that great food IMO. For tapas, can't go past movida in the city but may be hard to get into. On the subject of Spanish, Johnston street in fitzroy has several Spanish restaurants, flamenco bars & a fantastic providore, Casa Iberica.
Trouble with Melbourne is too much choice! Have fun & please pass on any recommendations.

Thanks for that I love Vietnamese food so will have a look at Victoria street. Not a fan of Wagamama. Have been to one in Subiaco in Perth and didn't enjoy it. Like Spanish food and know Fitzroy. My SIL lived here in Northcote for many years. She only moved to Perth one year ago. She took me to Fitzroy a few times.
Thanks will let you know how we go

Indian Tukka on Victoria Parade, Collingwood is excellent and, next door, Ing Doi (Thai) is also worth a visit, we often see kids in there.
Madam Sousou (I think that is the correct spelling) on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy is very good, but not sure if it is really suitable for youngsters.
Shakuhari in Carlton is fabulous for unusual vegetarian fare.
Yim Yam have a couple of restaurants - I only know the one on Smith Street, Collingwood / Fitzroy. Also, further down Smith Street is Huxtables - I believe Heston was seen there earlier this year but, once again, I think it is more adult oriented and we have never eaten there.
Lygon Street, Carlton is, of course, the Italian area but I suspect most of the restaurants along there are losing some of their soul. Similarly, loads of restaurants along Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. Don't really know any of them very well as they are constantly changing.

We went to Melbourne a in July and went to Hellenic Republic.
Yes it is George's restaurant - Fabulous food!!
Few other favourites:
The Merchant - Guy Rossi italian restaurant
Rare - this is a steak house (I'm vego and the menu catered for me
)
Anywhere on Lygon Street - make sure you visit Brunetti's for cake and coffee
De Graves espresso bar - best coffee in Australia!
For a quick lunches the soup kitchen in DeGraves lane. Opposite the soup kitchen is a fantastic sandwich/roll shop prices are really cheap!
Went to St Kilda for breakfast - can't remember the name - it was soooo good!
Where ever you go though it is much cheaper than the rip off prices here in Perth!
Enjoy your holiday.

Mama Fergie, Rara has already answered your question but to add that Helenic Republic is in Lygon St but the Brunswick end which is more residential area rather than the Italian area spoken about. Great advice in Victoria St and we quite like Republican whichs on the beach in St Kilda - OK food and a great atmosphere particularly on the weekend when they have a live band, our kids love it ther - fantastic chips.

Thanks everyone for all these wonderful recommendations. I really want to try Hellenic Republic but may not get a reservation. Soooo many to choose from. Yes Rara we do pay way too much in Perth. Spoiled for choice here.
