Are you an adventurous cook?
« on: September 13, 2012, 09:28:43 pm »
I see people experimenting and doing wonderful things on this forum every day and I'm in awe.

I'm not really adventurous at all in the kitchen, I tend to follow recipes to the letter.

Wish I had the courage to though, I think I'm worried about mucking something up completely so it's not edible at all - seems like a waste of food.

What are you like? Have you always been that way?

Suzanne

I'm like you Susie, I much rather make recipes that have already been tried with good reviews.
I'm happy to convert recipes for the TM but only if they sound nice in the first place.
I will happily change some of the ingredients where I can in a recipe but I don't make up recipes as I go. :)

If its a new recipe I normally follow it, next time tweak.

I also just make things by taste & smell or whats in the pantry.

I rarely go by the recipe if cooking but when it comes to baking I stick to the recipe especially for quantities.
CP's favourites are marvelous, pretty much stick to the recipe with those and Cookies recipes too that we got as part of our goodie bag. The limoncello melting moments are divine.

I love recipe books, read  them constantly, but am always changing ingredients  ;D

I eat gluten free and mainly added sugar free. I am guilty of telling someone that was a great recipe and when discussing it realise I have changed it quite a few times.  I also cook adding a bit of this and that and usually turns out well. My DH can't understand why I love recipe books so much :D

Ditto that for me!

I rarely follow a recipe. They just don't work for me. I use recipes as guidelines, but I add/remove ingredients according to what I think would taste nice or what I have in the pantry. I also change the method depending on what would be more economical or practical in my kitchen with the equipment I have. I've got much better at modifying recipes since I've got older and gained more experience in the kitchen, and also been a member of this forum! ;D
I'm pleased to say that I've never modified a recipe to be so terrible that it was inedible. I know enough about flavours, cooking methods and cooking times not to have that happen ;)

Having always lived out bye in the countryside even in UK, shopping is a terrible chore and many meals are made from the cupboard/freezer with lots of improvisation.

Don't think ever had anything we couldn't eat, but don't always make again!

Living in the backblocks I sometimes mix and match recipes.  I have often had some unusual outcomes - but mostly it's edible.  Possibly with a do not go back there note to self  :D
