Hally, I use the quick oats, and add twice as much liquid as oats. I cook for 1.5 minutes, then stir, then cook 30 second bursts until I get the thickness I want. Keep an eye on it or it might boil over, and that is a real pain to clean :P

I make my porridge just about every day in the microwave.

Because I add a few 'extras' my technique will probably need a bit of adapting but, basically, ... in a separate plastic container, I measure out 200 ml of milk (or milk/water mix), to 1 1/2 - 2 tbs rolled oats (I use Lowan's brand, not the quick cooking variety), a pinch of salt and shake like mad to combine everything.  Then pour into your bowl and into the microwave for 2 minutes, give it a stir then another minute and final stir.  This makes a fairly thick brew, which I prefer, so you may need to experiment to find the consistency you like.

Hally if you soak the oats (quick oats) with milk or water over night it is even faster.
This is what I do for work - soak in the container when I get to work, ready for morning tea.

For regular oats, I would definitely soak them in a microwave proof bowl overnight to make it fast and easy for lr.

It's good that he likes porridge - that will set him up for a good day rather than sugary cereals.  :D

I read in a recipe the other day to make quick oats from normal oats give it a blitz in the tmx. Just don't turn it to oatmeal flour as I almost did.

I do the same as Amy - 1/3 quick oats to 2/3 water.  And quick cooking bursts til done.
I often add pureed fruit to the girls after it is cooked, to cool it down to eating temp. (& cuz they like it!!)  ;)

Hally, in the winter I make porridge in the TM, enough for 4 or 5 days. I put it in bowls in the fridge (covered with cling film and stacked on top of each other), then take one out each morning, add a drizzle of milk and microwave for about a minute. It saves washing the TM each day, and seems to reheat well. Could lr heat them up if you precooked them?

I find it just as easy to use the quick cook oats, boil the kettle, then pour the boiling water on, leave for 5 mins then they are ready!

We use quick oats cooked 1.5 mins, stirred then another minute. DS does his wn most mornings and as learnt not to fill the bowl too much. You also need to be careful the bowl s microwave safe so t doesn't get too hot.
