Lid off is much easier! As Suzanne said, as long as the scales are at 0 doesn't matter :)

CU, just one word of advice from me.  Just to make sure your scales are sitting correctly (dirty feet, the cord under the machine or something leaning against it can all interfere with the scales), I always put the lid on, zero the scales in then add the MC.  Mine constantly weighs 25g but others have said theirs weighs 30g.  If it doesn't weigh what it normally does it means there is something interfering with the TMX so check it out and have another go at weighing the MC.  Once you are happy with it, proceed to weight your ingredients either through the hole or with the lid off which is easier for the bulk of the ingredients.
