DIY Super Quick Quick Oats Sachets
« on: June 14, 2013, 04:34:16 am »
Hope this helps someone... I do prefer TMX porridge with apple & sultanas etc but when I'm in a hurry for work, this is fine.

Those oats sachets are super convenient, however at $1.29/100g compared to home brand quick oats at 17c/100g, you pay a lot for the packaging. With a few trials, this is what I've done to make my own....

Each sachet has 33g of oats and requires 125ishmL milk or water.
This is the equivalent to approx 1/4 cup oats and 1/2 cup milk/water.

You will need:
a packet of quick cook oats
I also bought a large air tight container
a cheap set of measuring spoons
optional: paper bags/zip lock bags/reusable containers

I poured approximately half the packet of oats into the TMX.
Then pressed Turbo 5 times.
Poured this into my large air tight container.
Repeated with the other half of oats.
Done. Almost.

Storage:
I keep all the oats in the large air tight container and the cheap 1/3 cup measuring scoop and the 1/2 cup measuring scoop live in there too. That was so I don't have to search around the drawers for the exact size I need etc.

To make quick oats quickly:
Then when I need oats in a hurry, I put a small scoop (1/3) of oats in a bowl, add a large scoop (1/2) of milk and then put it in the microwave for 90 seconds.

Alternatively you could make your own sachets with paper bags or zip lock bags or reusable containers (great for camping/travelling with a little one). I imagine this might be useful when DD is old enough to make herself breakfast.

Just bought two boxes of quick oats today. Boys have gone mad over them lately and the sachets are just the right serving size for them. Will try this way when I run out of sachets. Thanks for sharing jam :)

Great idea. I buy the "normal" rolled oats then blitz  a few times in TMX to make them into quick cook, as usually the normal oats are a lot cheaper.

I only discovered recently how to make the quick cook oats from the normal one.
Jamberie that is a great idea. Especially for camping. I will make some up and try cooking it on the gas stove and see how long it takes. I would love hot porridge when we go to Birdsville but I know now that everyone will be hurrying to get away each morning.

I do the same as Greyhoundmum - just buy the normal oats and blitz a couple of times.  That way DH will make his own porridge because even he can handle the microwave. (I did have the write the instructions on the side of the container though - otherwise I would end up getting a phone call at work asking me what to do.)
You haven't failed at anything until you stop trying.

Snappy posted a good Instant Porridge recipe last year. It has powdered milk added, so you only need to add boiling water and stir for it to thicken and be ready to eat.
I don't put the sugar in, but I add cinnamon powder and chopped nuts to the mixture.

This is my first attempt at linking a recipe, so fingers crossed........

This is great thanks, I would never have thought to do this. I feel like I spend a fortune on the sachets that often only get half eaten by the kids, this looks much more economical.

Thanks Jam.
I also blitz oats as you suggest and keep in a jar and use it to make a quick banana smoothee.
To one cup of milk (anymilk) add 2 dessert spoons blitzed oats,
one teaspoon chia seeds
1/2 to 1 banana
and any thing else you want i.e.honey.
Blitz and drink.
This is a great breakfast!

Isn't there a lot of sugar in the bought sachets?
