Split Pea and ham Soup

Pea and Ham Soup



Ingredients:

150g split peas (green or yellow)
1 onion, cut into quarters
1 clove garlic
30g oil
1 carrot, roughly chopped
2 sticks celery, cut into 2cm lengths
1200ml water
1 smoked ham hock, cut into pieces
that will fit into the TMX basket
2 bay leaves
Salt and pepper
Parsley and olive oil to garnish
Preparation:

Place split peas into TM bowl and mill for 1 minute on speed 9. Set aside.

Place garlic and onions into TM bowl and chop for 5 seconds on speed 7. Add oil and sauté for 5 minutes at 100°C on speed 1.

Add carrots and celery, chop for 5 seconds on speed 6. Add water to the bowl.

Place pieces of ham hock and bay leaves in basket and position basket in TM bowl.

Cook for 40 minutes at 90°C on speed soft with the MC out of lid.

Remove basket, discard bay leaves and allow meat to cool.

Add milled peas to the TM bowl and cook 15 minutes at 100°C on speed 1.

Meanwhile, remove meat from the hocks and roughly chop. Put the meat in a bowl and place the bowl into the Varoma. You can place the bones and skin back into the basket and into the TM bowl while the soup is still cooking to impart extra flavour. Position the Varoma on the TMX lid to keep the meat warm.

Test the soup to see if the peas are cooked sufficiently and adjust seasonings. Remove the basket, if you returned it to the TM bowl, and slowly turn the dial up to speed 9 and blend for about 40 seconds.

Serve the soup into bowls or tureen, add the pieces of ham and garnish with chopped parsley and drizzle with olive oil.

Nay-nay - This turned out a treat (even though the hock was standing up through the hole of TMX!). I added a tablespoon of vegie stock to add more flavour.

CP - was just about to make the EDC recipe today, but stopped because I did my research on the forum first. Found a special piece of ham in the meat section at Coles of about 300g+ and it was bee-u-ti-full.  A whole Thermoservo full disappeared in like minutes.  We can't stop licking our lips and patting our tummies. Thank you TMXR for a lovely soup 5/5

So .... we have just had 230mm of rain over the weekend and weather felt like soup weather and we have just had a pig 'done' so I look up "ham and pea" soup and guess what Thermomixer has just what I need!!! Thanks Thermomixer is there anything you haven't put up on here?? This turned out a treat (even though the hock was standing up through the hole of TMX!)  :D ;)

Nay-nay we got 10mm here today and was very pleased with that - could not imagine 230mm.  Hope you are all staying dry up there.

It's spooky - just as you start to get the rain, we're getting the first signs of spring.  We had a glorious sunny day today, although it was very cold.   I don't think we're quite ready for ice-cream recipes yet  :D

Soon you'll be into the sorbets and ice-creams! It's hard to remember to keep your blades sharp with ice in winter but you have to keep on top of that.  :)

We are quite saturated!! And have a sea of green grass. Kids had a day off school just because our track was boggy and all the creeks around us are to capacity but I'm glad we live on a mountain and not down on the flat land that's under water. There is a consultant out at Roma - our thoughts do go out to those guys out west.  :-* :-*

We had the storm of the century in Melbourne - if you check Youtube and Melbourne & Storm then you will see some incredible scenes - if you haven't seen TV news footage already.

Glad you like the idea of P&H soup - would love a photo of the hock out the lid.  I cut mine into bits.

Yes saw the wild weather down there - did you get any damage?   I thought we had a sunny day this morning - bright and sunny and the sky as blue as you'll ever see it but clouds are rolling back over now.

LOL! Sorry should of got a photo - next time we get a pig "done" for sure! I did try to cut it but just couldn't get through the bone! If I could it would have fit in nicely in 3 pieces. Didn't know what to do - so I just stuck it through the hole and put an old enamel dish over the top so it all got cooked.  ;)

We missed the main storm but 5 km away they had huge hail stones - broke lots of car windows.

Insurance premiums will go up again !!

We have a couple of ham hocks in the freezer so I'll make this when the weather cools down. It is amazing the rain some of you have had, far too much in many cases. It must be horrid. We had a bit of rain in Albany and it seemed funny as we haven't had any in Perth since about November.
May all dairy items in your fridge be of questionable vintage.

Thanks Thermomixer - I must try this - I made the pea and ham soup out of the everyday cook book today and it wasn't good - pretty sure I followed the recipe but it tasted 'funny' - so I threw it out - first time thats happened with the everyday cookbook.  Anyone else had problems with that recipe?  Or is it just me?

I wasn't impressed with the EDC recipe.  The fun part with this is getting the bones/meat into the basket  ;)
