I've just read this very
interesting blog
on the Eat Your Books website - how to make your own brown sugar. It might be handy if you want to save on larder space or run out of brown sugar at a vital moment.

Brilliant Bonsai. I always have molasses on hand. I have been buying molasses sugar too as it gives a lovely taste to biscuits. Now I will do it myself.

I wish I had known this a few weeks go when I ran out of brown sugar and had to ask DH to go to the supermarket to get some more.

Should have checked this site earlier. We are going out for dinner and I started making some biscuits to take and every recipe had brown sugar which I had run out of. What a brilliant idea to be able to choose how dark to have the sugar as I normally only use light muscadova or rapadura but there is the odd occasion when dark is needed. Forum to the rescue once again.

Thanks Bonsai. I have added Golden Syrup in the past. Will certainly try this.

Well I never gave a thought as to how brown sugar was made. How easy is that! No more lumpy brown sugar.
Someone please tell me though - what is and where do I find Molasses syrup?

I have a special little clay tile that you moisten and put in the brown sugar container to stop the sugar from going hard

Denise's I buy molasses in Woolworths. I often use it instead of honey if I want a strong flavour. When you visit the Bundaberg Rum Distillery you get to taste the raw product, molasses. I love it. When Dad used to feed it to the cattle I would put my hand under the drum he was pouring it from a gobble. It is really no wonder I have a weight problem.

I would imagine it is just plain old molasses.

Molasses is also beneficial in the compost heap / giving a boost in a no dig garden. Apparently the little critters have a sweet tooth as well!
