Fresh Yeast
« on: July 02, 2015, 11:58:31 am »
I read on an old blog that you were able to buy fresh yeast from Coles and Woolworths that had bakeries in them.
I decided to give it a try as my new bread book uses fresh yeast for everything. I asked at my local Woolworths. The person in charge of the bakery said he couldn't sell me any but he did give me some, about a third of a block. I was very impressed.
Tonight's Naan was made using fresh yeast.

Thanks. I froze most of it, but will get some out of the freezer on Sunday as we are having Panneer and Chick Pea curry.

Your naan looks delicious.
I like using fresh yeast too. I can buy it from the deli counter of my local Foodland supermarket really cheaply, but I always forget to freeze it. I must get some more and pop it in the freezer

I didn't know you could freeze fresh yeast.  I thought it would kill it.
I do the best I can

My mum always froze fresh yeast.   Wrapped in cling wrap then foil.  She would cut it and  freeze it in small amounts
You can also freeze SD but I have never tried this.

I only have a tiny bit of fresh yeast left. I made the No Fuss recipe today and used it. I have enough for another SD recipe.
I haven't had success freezing it but will try again when I can get some more.

You can buy fresh yeast at some 'continental' delis. In Perth I know you can buy it at the Re Store in Northbridge. Probably also at Leederville.

Thanks. I will call in next time I a over that way. I tried a couple more supermarkets last week but even though it looks like it they said they don't make the breads in the store now.
