Brisbanite living in Sicily
« on: September 25, 2009, 07:18:47 pm »
Hello all!

Originally from Brisbane, I now live in Sicily with my husband. As a wedding gift we were given a "bimby" as they call them here and I love it! But the only recipes i have are italian. I am looking forward to cooking some good Auzzie inspried dishes for my husbands' family here!

Hi & welcome to the forum kellinsicily. You obviously speak Italian - what are your favourite recipes from the Italian book.  Very different from ours I guess. You will find plenty on this forum to give you a little taste of home and it will be interesting to get feedback from your husband's relatives thoughts on Aussie recipes too.

Hello and welcome.  How wonderfully exciting to be given a Bimby as a wedding gift.

Thankyou all so kindly for all your welcoming replies!

I promise to share my favourite recipes...though quite a few need tweaking so I am still experimenting!

Grazie e buona sera

Ciao Kelly,

I got back from a trip to Sicily in August and that's where I saw the Bimby for the first time.  It was at a friend's house - she lives in Catania but we were at her holiday house in Donnalucata - just beautiful!!  She made a very nice lemon cake and mentioned it was made in the Bimby and I was positive we didn't have anything like that in Australia - but she assured me that you can buy these machines worldwide.

Well when I got back to Melbourne, I did a search on 'Bindy' which is what I remembered and I got all things Bindy Irwin!!!  Anyway eventually I typed in something like 'kitchen appliance made in Germany' and that's when I struck gold and realised it was Bimby not Bindy!!

Anyway, I've had my machine now for about 3 weeks and am enjoying it although I am always a bit worried about things not turning out and having to throw out and start again, but so far so good - the Cape Seed loaf was great and I toasted the remaining piece the next day and it was so nice!!

Anyway, I hope you're enjoying yourself there and have a granita con brioche for me tomorrow for breakfast!!!

Ciao tutti!

Grandma, I am feeling for you....Sicily in August is ever so HOT! But I hope you enjoyed you stay :) I have never made it to Ragusa but hear it is beautiful. So you are a new Bimby owner aswell ?! I hope you also are finding it convenient, quick and easy. I have been at times worried also about recipes not turning out so to start with have halved or quartered all recipes, just to experiment and see if they need to be tweaked. That way I am not so worried about wasting ingredients. I am sad to report that the season of granite con brioche is unfortunately finshed...I miss it already!!

Buona fortuna!

Kelly

So granite is just a summer thing in Sicily? Thought it was an all year round thing - well we've only ever been in summer so that's why it's always been available.  Don't think I'll ever travel again at that time of the year - too hot to do anything.   I think it will be an April or September holiday next time!!

I've had my machine for about 2 months and was very slow in using it at first - I was a bit like you in that I didn't want to cook up something and then throw it away.  But I've persevered and made quite a few things, mainly soups, sorbet and custards.  I've also made bread and ragu sauce which have come out really nice.  I made some vege soup for my gorgeous GS the other night and steamed some salmon for us at the same time - that turned out really nice too.

I got some cream today so will make some butter in the morning - couldn't believe how quick and easy it was to make!!

I'm thinking of buying an extra bowl as quite a few times I've wanted to quickly mince or chop something but I've been cooking something and was annoyed that I couldn't just whack on another bowl and do what I needed to do quickly - so I think an extra bowl is on the cards.

Enjoy the remainder of your good weather and happy cooking!!!
