Coffee Liqueur
«
on:

I'm blushing that my first ever recipe developed for the TMX (ie: not adapted from the books, blogs or forum) is alcohol! LOL
Ingredients:
390g raw sugar
370g hot water
30g instant freeze-dried coffee
500g vodka
1 large vanilla bean
Method:
Grind sugar on speed 9 for 30 seconds. Add hot water and coffee. Mix on 100 degrees, speed 4 for 1 min 30 sec. Slice vanilla bean in half, lengthwise and then each half into quarters. Add vanilla pieces and vodka to TMX bowl. Heat at 60 degrees, speed 3 for 8 minutes.
Pour into a glass bottle and sit for 4 days. Strain and pour into same bottle (will need approx 2L size). Store in a cool, dark place. Enjoy!
I have no idea of the resulting alcohol content of this liqueur.

LOL Bel! Glad some of us know you better than that!
Since I never have freeze dried coffee in my house I might substitute it with espresso topped up with hot water...

Great stuff Bel - are you blushing or is that the effects of testing your produce??
Think Gretchen and judydawn may like to keep some in the bedside table for any stressful days ahead.
Can't believe you are taking on the grandchild for a week - and can't just give it back when it screams - what were you thinking??

He still has 2 sleeps a day Thermomixer and also sleeps right through at night (for his Mum anyway) so hopefully DH and I will survive the week. It is just something Mums do for their daughters - give them a break when they need it. You never know, one day Mrs T may do the same with her grand-child - ha ha ha

Don't worry JD - she is already talking about how we'll have to rearrange the furniture and cupboards for when the little tacker has sleep-overs
The little man has gone on his first holiday & he really seems to be an angel - always smiling and laughing ( if all kids were like that i could cope
)
Good luck - thinking of you

I'll be happy to test this for you!
500g vodka - how many mls is this (if you can remember or have a pre conversion recipe)? Just trying to work out approx cost for 2L. For those who haven't noticed, I seem to do that to everything - in my nature, career etc

I'm getting extra excited - Liquorland has Kahlua 700ml on special for $30. And I think I read somewhere that for liquid mls = grams so 500mls Vodka is $20. The remaining ingredient prices are negligible as they're not a special purchase. So 2L homemade for $20 instead of 3 bottles @ $30 each is a saving of approx $65.
This would make a great Christmas present for the extra special people!

You are so brave Bel. My grandchildren will be here in two days and yes Thermomixer I have made plans.
I have made liqueurs from home made raw spirit using a store bought essence (around $8 and makes 2 litres) and liquid glucose but your recipe sounds very nice. I have never had instant coffee in the house but I think it would be the same with a very strong espresso. I will give it a try. Now how about Grand Marnier? Maybe a brandy base? Maybe we need an alcoho's thread. Oh I mean an alcoholic beverage

Brave? Nah!
Yes, 500g vodka is 500ml or 2 cups. Yep, about $20 worth. You could use any coffee I'm sure. It's a fair bit of instant 1/2 cup. Not sure what that equates to for our fair trade instant - maybe $2.50 for 30g? And 50c for the vanilla bean (bulk bought - can't recall the exact price). And $1.70 for the organic raw sugar (bulk bought).
So it's under 2L - maybe 1.75 or 1.8L - didn't measure and under $25. The coffee flavour is fairly strong. I like Kahlua but don't drink coffee. If you're a coffee drinker, it's probably not a strong flavour.
Yes, would make a lovely Chrissy present in small bottles and nicely labeled.
I've never made raw spirit or used essences before, but I'd like to try fruit wines once our orchards are in full production...

Yes it will make a lovely Chrissy pressie. There is an instrument called an alcometer you can buy in Cairns at any of the several brew shops. It costs about $24 or visit aweb sites such as this one.

to have an idea of what I am talking about. All you have to do is pop it into a bit of your liquid and it will tell you the alcohol %. Also

You can find lots of info on line about making fruit wine. I think there are three or four places around the area that make fruit wines including the one at Murdering Point and deBrueys at Mareeba. Call in to Jaques Coffee at Mareeba and taste their coffee liqueur to compare yours to it.
I think you are on to a good thing mama bel.

If the vodka is 40% alcohol - about that - then it will be around 16%
