Hi from Bendigo
« on: October 09, 2009, 01:55:27 am »
I am new to the site and doing my research on buying a thermomix. Went to a demo and loved it but need to convince my husband that its not just another gadget. Looking at hosting my own demo mid Nov.

Hi Shanmac and welcome. Make sure you get your husband involved at the demo as most of us have found that it is our husbands who want the machine. They seem to love it for some reason or other.

Hi shanmac - tell us a bit more so we can help give you evidence for your purchase.

It is a great machine - but only if you use it.

i am SAHM of 4 kids, 7,5,3 & 1 so trying to justify the price. I want to give my kids good healthy food to eat and myself and husband low fat healthy meals - is it all possible? Are my current recipes easy to convert and use in the TMX? Are there plenty of recipe books available to purchase? I guess the big thing is that we have all grown up with the mantra if it seems to good to be true it probably is!! As I said I have seen a demo and fell in love just don't want to purchase and be disappointed.

Have a look at my poor old blog at some stage - it has been a bit neglected - but there are lots of recipes that have been converted and also check brazen's blog as well as here.

It can save you money if you are using lots of prepared stuff.

We will point you towards threads that may help too.

Hi Shanmac
Cookie's advice is great. My husband bought mine after he saw the demo. (Funny that I timed the demo for when he was at home recuperating from knee surgery!!).   With 4 children under 8 you must lead a hectic life so I think the pure time saving aspect of the TMX will be beneficial for you as well as the option for unprocessed foods. I have found I just don't buy biscuits, cakes or packaged foods anymore because the TMX is so quick to whip them up and am able to utilise more fresh vegies  because the boys don't see them. We also make litres of smoothies each week and they oftem have things in them that I normally couldn't get them to eat. It is a large  $ outlay but the benefits truly do outweigh the cost.

Hi & welcome to our world of the TMX Shanmac - you only have to read things on this forum to know we are all madly in love with our machine. There are oldies like me, lots of young ones with young children and surprisingly (to me at least) lots of men who love to dabble with the TMX.  Personally I prefer the recipes posted on this forum as they suit me more than the recipe books but it doesn't hurt to have as many recipe books as you can afford so that you have more choices. I have surprised
myself at how I fell into converting some of my favourite recipes so if I can do it, I believe anyone can do it.  I find myself browsing recipe books now but viewing them with converting in mind.  You must have your husband there (and other people's too if you can manage it) as once they see this amazing machine in action, they seem very keen to have one in their kitchen.  Another point worth noting is that it is said you very rarely, if ever see the current model for sale on Ebay so that speaks for itself.  Good luck, enjoy your demo and we hope to see you back here with the news that you have ordered one ;) ;)  In the meantime, browse this forum as much as you possibly can.

Shanmac, as a young family of 4 living on Austudy while I finish uni, we don't have money to spare.  However after my mum purchased one at a demo, I used her as my "test case" for about 6 weeks.  I harassed her constantly to make sure that she was using it, hadn't regretted it etc.

I've had mine for about 5 weeks now, and have cooked at least once in it every day, if not 2-3 times.  I'm finding that my shopping habits have changed, even though I never bought biscuits or cakes.

Here's an example of how I'm saving money.  Now, instead of buying the cheapest bread on the shelf, I make my own bread.  When comparing the price between both breads, my loaf cost approx $1.30 but is as healthy if not healthier than a loaf that costs about $4.50 at Coles (eg Helgas or another good bakery style bread).  So I'm saving approx $3.20 per loaf.

So if you're worried about price, mine will pay for itself pretty quickly, and I'm sure you'll find the same thing.  And most importantly, I have gained much more control over what my children eat which is fantastic.
Helping you to take back control over what your family eats, one meal at a time.

I agree with what everyone here says and especially about having your husband at the demo - just make sure there is at least one other man too. Apart from saving money on bread I have not bought ice-cream, mayonnaise or stock  since buying my machine in November last year, I also make my own washing powders and that saves a lot of money plus being better for the environment.
Go for it you will never regret it.

I think the TMX could actually be an exception to the saying
'if it sounds too good to be true .................................'

Although it is expensive and very good it is true, as others have said you do make a lot of savings.

hi, i just read a review on it, and wanted one.
I ordered it 2 days after sight unseen.
I have had my machine since Tuesday this week, and have used it 15-16 times already.

I do bake alot now, but heaps more this week.
I am a mum of 2 little ones too, and smoothies, sorbet, ice creams, are just so easy once you have it.
I will try bread soon.
