The Canadian Freezer
« on: January 21, 2010, 02:54:38 am »
I have launched a website this new year, for a variety of reasons, but one, of course, is to write and record my recipes for my children and my Thermomix customers. With all of you, "down under", in mind, I was preparing to write about my Canadian Freezer... which comes in really handy at Christmas time... and my cookies were scavenged by Magpies!
Read about it here:
 http://www.acanadianfoodie.com/2010/01/18/the-canadian-freezer
But what was really funny is that I truly was doing this little piece with my Forum Thermomix friends in mind... and then, they struck!
Happy New Year, all... you are back to school, staring a new year, and I am back from the holidays, continuing with the old one. :) ;)

Valerie, that is so funny! I've left a comment on your blog. I'm amazed to see your Canadian Freezer!! I imagined you were going to show us your freezer with a whole load of deer or moose meat in it or something! ;D
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

Hi Valerie,  Great story.  I have a friend who also lives in Edmonton who keeps us posted re all the cold weather you have been having.  Some of the pics he has sent are amazing.  Perhaps you may have read some of his work as he is a crime journalist called Byron Christopher but I think he writes under the name of Chris Byron?    I used to work with him many years ago when he was out here in Australia for a couple of years.

Valerie, that is amazing. Who would have ever thought you could leave things outside to keep frozen.  It is so different to here.  Thanks for showing us. The magpies must have thought they were in heaven.

Very clever birds indeed.  What if you packed your goodies in tupperware or something similar, would they be safe in them?

Hi Valerie,

too funny :D. At least you haven't had any racoons on your deck throwing tupperware ;). I use my garage, attached to the kitchen, as my animal-free freezer and storage at the moment  :-))

My garage is fridge temperature rather than freezer temps.  Took a couple of pork shoulders out of the garage this morning that I bought for a really good price a couple of days ago and I didn't have room for in the inside fridge, broke them down into chunks for making sausage.

Wish I had a freezer temperature spot inside that I could use while I defrost the freezer - I live on a ravine and foxes and raccoons wander through my back yard regularly so leaving stuff outside no matter how well bundled wouldn't discourage the wildlife.  I was bringing in the groceries once - left a couple of bags in the open trunk of the car - when I came back out a huge raccoon was sitting in the trunk with a bag of naan bread in his hand.  He just gave me a look - then ambled out of the trunk into the culvert.

I know that must be annoying Chocdoc but I find it rather nice.

It does sound nice doesn't it Cookie.  All we get here are cats wandering through our property on their way home. We do have some magpies at the moment though - how I love to hear their warbling and they seem to have taken over from the family of crows who used to hang around.  Much prefer the sound of the magpies to the crows.  Ha, just realised what I said - I am a Port supporter (magpies) and the crows are our other team here in S.A. (but I don't mind them either)
