some ideas for new user
« on: February 14, 2010, 10:40:48 am »
hi, i am unsure if i am posting in the correct place, but i am sure someone will let me know :)
I have not as yet recieved my Thermy but i am trying to get prepared for his arrival. I have read many helpful posts but i was wondering if someone could help me with this.
I want to make a list of all the things i can make myself (instead of buying of shelf) and that is used on a daily basis or is needed in many recipes, therefore i can be organised and have it on hand.
An example of things i have thought of are; (please add if i missed something which i am sure of that's why i am posting!)
* salad dressing
* castor sugar
* icing sugar
* hommus
* dukkah
* butter
* jam
* stock
* sauces (bbq & tom)
I would love to hear everyone elses ideas.
THis is the most helpful and friendly forum I have ever been a part of.
Thanks heaps

Mum23, off the top of my head come the obvious - bread, biscuits, tortillas, pastry then there is cordial, fruit juice, ice-cream, washing machine powder or goo, yoghurt, playdough, cornchips, pizza sauce, curry pastes, coconut milk & breadcrumbs.  Others will add plenty more I am sure.

If you can't mum23, just ask and someone will post the link to the recipe.  Sometimes things are a bit tricky to find - the search thingy hardly ever works for me.

I would add veg. stock concentrate.   I've just made my first batch (after having my machine for 9 months ) and I use some of it most days.

Next time I do it (way in the future as there's so much of it :D) I will possibly add a bit less salt....

What about making rice flour first so you can make your own baking powder so you can make your own SR flour.  ;) Oh and chocolate topping, coffee syrup - I think everyone else has  mentioned all the other stuff I make. You said sauces - does that include tomato,sweet chilli,Worcestershire..... oh and don't forget your vanilla (you don't need TMX for that)  ;)

Get some extra icecube trays as you'll go through extra ice, and also snaplock bags for freezing things like bananas, mangoes, berries and other fruits when you see them on special, ready for when you want to make smoothies, jam, fruit sauces.

A good supply of sugar for the sorbets and if you intend to bake bread some Bakers' Flour and yeast, plus the seeds to go in it.
