I would make sure the pumpkin had cooled down before adding everything to the bowl. For something like these scones, if you plan ahead it is far more simple to cook the pumpkin when doing something else and keep it in the fridge or freeze it until you need it. Makes a much longer job of it if you have to cook the pumpkin just for this recipe.

Yes I would say these type of recipes only came about to get rid of leftovers.
So next time you have leftover pumpkin mashed it for scones.

I made these a few days ago, and used roasted JAP pumpkin that I had leftover from the pumpkin soup I made the night before. Because it's been roasted, the pumpkin was quite sweet on its own, so I think next time I do it that way I'll leave out the sugar.

I'm sure you can add choc chips to virtually anything TL, have a go - can't do any harm.
