Rice Milk
« on: February 23, 2010, 02:01:36 am »
Hi all.
I have just started to make my own rice milk (making my own costs about 45c in comparrison to $2.50 per litre).  My kids prefer the taste of the shop bought stuff and complain that mine tastes too watery  :-[ :-[.  Has anyone got a different rice milk recipe that they use and that has more of a shop bought taste (It does make me suspicious of the shop stuff, how do they get it white and how do they get it to taste like something other than water when they say they have no sugar or additives and its all organic ??? ???).
Thanks

I think Quirky Jo would probably be able to help.  I think she has a good recipe on her blog for rice/almond milk if that interests you (just google Quirky Cooking to find her blog).  Perhaps you could try half storebought and half homemade mixed together until the kids get a bit more used to it.  :)

Here is a link to Jo's two recipes.

And that's a great idea of Chelsea's too.  Steady as will help.

And for a real treat, try this one.  We drink milk, but loooove this smoothie!

I was just about to answer - you guys are too quick for me!!  You can use cashews instead of almonds if you want it creamier, and add less water if you want it creamier.  My friend had the same problem, and mixed the two for a while, which helped.  :) Jo

Too right Chelsea!  If I tell DH that I'm cooking something of Jo's, he has complete faith in me, even when the ingredients are a bit unusual!

Just to add myself as another fan of Quirky's blog! Although I am still a thermy beginner, it is so good to have all these recipes for restricted diets. Thank you Jo!

I will definitely be making these nut milk recipes, as even though the ingredients listed on the packet of the shop bought rice milk seem to be okay, my body appears to be querying this. So I'm with you on this one Earth mumma.

There's obviously more in bought rice milk than is listed in the ingredients, as it's way too sweet to be just rice!  Cyndi O'Meara says food manufacturers are allowed to not declare componenets of ingredients that make up less than 5% of a product, so there could be all sorts of hidden things in it.  Much safer making your own.  (Not to mention cheaper!)  :)

This is why I love my Thermomix more than how quickly it helps to create delicious food - I am back in control of my family's food and know exactly what is in our food.  This is the main reason I became a TM consultant, because no matter why you are attracted to purchasing aTM (ie; hate cooking, time poor, love cooking, allergies or saving money - along with people very interested in wholefood/healthy cooking), you naturally eat healthier food because the additives, flavouring and colourings are removed and most cooking is not over 100oc.  I love that I can help people eat more healthy whole foods without it necessarily being their "thing".  It's a happy by product of TM food.

Tried the rice/almond milk this morning and used it to make polenta aka semolina style for breakfast then grated some apple and pears and sliced banana, with a little pure maple syrup on top.  Got the thumbs up all round  ;D ;D and will be making it this way from now on (saving a packet too).
Thanks all for your help
