I'm so peeved!
« on: March 06, 2010, 02:12:16 am »
This morning I converted and made orange/poppy seed cupcakes (in the shape of a hearts too) for my Mum's Birthday today.
Was just about to drizzle some orange icing over them, when my eye caught a glimpse of something sticking out one of them.
It was a a fine piece of metal, not unlike a staple  >:(
Of course I have to abandon them now, and throw out the container of sugar, flour, and poppy seeds.....as I don't know where it came from  :-[

This is how they looked pre-icing.

Will try again when I get more ingredients.

How annoying!  But at least you're on to it before consumption.  Could have been so much worse.

Oh, that would be infuriating! Is it possible to crumb them, looking for any more bits, then use the crumbs for something?

Hmm, but there might be some really small bits that are hard to see. Darn it. And they look so good too.

The bin has already consumed them  ;)
Sadly this isn't the first time I have come across foreign objects in ingredients.
One time we dug out a long piece of fishing wire in a wheat-bix, and a sharp metal shard in porridge  :-))

I think your right!  :)

Oh no!  Did you report it to the manufactures???

Any claims at work are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. Some are false claims but occassionally there's something that's legit.

How disappointing~! At least you found it before someone bit into it

I guess it's hard to know where the metal came from ILB, with the three suspects either being sugar, flour or poppy seeds...

So sorry that happened to you maddy, they looked so gorgeous.  :-*
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

That is such a shame, but I have to tell my story.

I remember going to a restaruant and biting down on a tender lamb veal only to find a sharp piece of metal not unlike a stanley knife trimmer. Reporting this to the waiter and giving him the metal, and then lifting up the water to look at wavy fronds of something in the container coming up from the bottom....

They rang up the butcher to find that something definitely had happened to their meat cutter that day, and that then they happily give me my meal for free (not my partner), and that they may have missed cleaning the water bottles somehow... whoopee!!!  how generous of them... no I have never been back to the Sickcilian in Subiaco.

WoW creampuff......that's positively scary!

We went to a Mexican restaurant once, and my meal came with some salad.  I was enjoying it, and noticed this little caterpillar, doing a merry dance around my lettuce  :o I told the waitress, she just plucked it off the top, and said "there you go"  :o
Then heard them in the kitchen laughing.
As I had eaten the main part of my meal, I didn't request a fresh salad.....as you know the kind of things they do to returned meals :-))

But the fishing wire in the weetbix and the porridge incident would have been worth filing a complaint it.

I remember years ago finding saw dust in a vanilla slice from a bakery that was having renovations, a sliver of that flat steel used in steel wool in the middle of a salad sandwhich... and the best one.... a bakery near work used to make these mini pizza's, one day I'd ordered one, they heated it there under the grill and I went straight back to work sat down in the staff room and tucked in... after about 3 bites, I noticed something moving and it was full of maggots  :-X :-X everyone else sitting at the table was nearly vomiting too! The bakery weren't too apologetic and eventually offered something else, but I told them I wasnt paying for the alternative!

And the winner of 'who has had the worst experience of finding something in their food item' is ............... :o :o
You girls sure have some experiences I wouldn't have liked to have had.  Nothing exciting like that has ever happened to me thank goodness. I'm sure there are lots more stories to come yet.

I don't know why I didn't think to report it either  ???

A neighbour has worked in many food factories(welding).....and the stories he could tell you.....you wouldn't purchase anything from a packet!
Specifically McCains frozen chips he mentioned.......wouldn't touch with a barge pole!  :-X
