Review - $4 Choc mud cake, Budget busters

Budget busters
$4 Choc mud cake

Great texture - just like bought mud cake. Very moist.
Very quick and easy just mix all ingredients together.
It does freeze well and thawed pieces are just like the fresh ones, so perfect for quick snacks and lunch boxes.
Lacking a bit in chocolate flavour - but I like mine rich - So would up the cocoa a bit next time.
Would be a great birthday cake or served with custard or ice cream as a desert.

4/5

I've often looked at that recipe and wondered as I am wary of cakes in the TMX. Thanks for the review Sheree.

I ran out of Cocoa on the weekend and had to ice my chocky cake - I just mixed Molasses and icing sugar together and it looked very chocolatey and tasted real yummy.

Not unbearable.  :D LOL I think the molasses isn't really sweet so adding it to the sugar made it edible and thick enough to ice the cake.  ;)

I made the mud cake on the weekend too. Love the fact that it takes no eggs and makes such a great size cake. Took it to a church lunch and it was devoured in seconds.
I prefer a much muddier cake that I usually make with a block of chocolate but as a chocolate cake this was lovely and moist and enjoyed by all who ate it.
Will have a go at my mud cake recipe in the TM on Monday when I make it for my eldest DS's b'day and post it on the forum. It is so easy.

My 8yo son made this the other day and we absolutely love it! The cake is still as fresh as when he made it. We've used it for dessert for the past 2 nights, plus morning tea and there's still heaps left. I think I might have to freeze some tomorrow and save it for the kids lunches.

A definite winner in our house. He's so proud of himself!

As well he should be jodi.  I have 5 yr old GD coming tomorrow so might see if she would like to make it.  The recipe says to pour the mixture into a large rectantular baking dish - what size did you ladies who have had success use please. I prefer recipes which tell us exactly what sized tin to use and generally overlook any recipe that is a bit vague in directions.

Hi Judy,
I used a lamington tin, approx 25cm x 30cm. At first I thought it might end up like fudge but it rose quite a lot.
It makes quite a bit cake. Plenty to freeze for that unannounced visitor!
I'm sure your GD will take great joy in making it with you.
Have fun with it.

Had great success with this cake. GD did most of the work and licking of the spoons etc.  Ran out of cocoa powder so ended up using 1/2 cocoa and 1/2 blitzed chocolate. After eating 3 pieces myself, what wasn't going home with GD went straight into the freezer.

That sounds delicious Judy! So glad it was a success for you and your lovely GD.
I don't think it would make it to the freezer in my house.  The boys would have demolished it!
We ended up taking our left over mud cake over to my mums for morning tea on Sunday so my son could show off to Grandma and Grandad.  There were fights over who was going to have the last piece.

Oooh! Got to try this with blitzed chocolate. I still love the famous Bimby Chocolate Cake, but will try this one as often there's no eggs in the house when I want to make a cake...
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.
