Curried Beef Mince with Cabbage - Budget Busters Booklet
« on: April 03, 2010, 10:06:38 am »
Recipe Name: Curried Beef Mince with Cabbage
Book Name: Budget Busters Booklet
Score: (out of 5*) 0/5

I was hoping that this would be a replacement for the family favourite Beef Chow Mein or Ki See Mein - very similar ingredients except used a packet of Chicken Noodle Soup Mix instead of all the spices.

It was not.  Maybe it's that the combination of spices are not to our liking?  But we won't be making it again.

Thanks for that Cathy.  I'd say that has to be about the lowest score ever given to a recipe here. It doesn't really look that appetising.

Low Score - yes I think you can work out that that's code for....

Wow - taht is bad.  Not sure if I have seen the recipe.  Maybe just needs tweaking with different herbs and spices ?

When I read the spice ingredients, I knew my family wouldn't eat this one.
I will make chookies chow mein this week I think.

Speaking of chow mein......after putting so much time, thought and variety into the meals I make, hubby turned around and told me his absolute favourite meal was......... chow mein    :-)) :-)) :-))
A little annoyed....I told him to jump into his tardis with his tastebuds, and transport himself back to the 70's pronto!   ;D

Will keep the man happy and make it for him anyway  ;)

Got to keep those men happy Maddy  ;) ;)  Chookies version is one I have been cooking for at least 40 years and it is loved by everyone - so good for the children with all those vegies in it too.  I love it with mashed potato and any leftovers I pour over whole baked jacket potatoes for another meal.  It freezes well too.

That is like my hubby Maddie who gets huffy if I don't serve up sausages at least once a month!!!  Thankfully now I have JD's curried snag recipe to keep him happy.

Thanks for the review Cathy.  I had often wondered about this recipe but was unsure about the ingredients.  Now I know - just don't go there!!!  ;D

mmm. I made this last night and it did not go down well. I make a similar curry with coconut milk but without the cardomom, celery or cabbage which is very nice. I think I'll stick to that next time I'd give it a 2/5 my hubby gave it a resounding thumbs down!

I am getting very frustrated that the recipes I am making from the books are not well received because I love my Bimby (her name is Rosie!) and I want to use her ALL the time. At the moment my hubby sees her going in the evening and just groans! I think a lot of the recipes need serious attention and will make sure I check out any reviews where possible for tweaks before! trying them out from now on!

So far my hubby has only liked the beef stroganoff and the beef bolognaise (ragu).

Men!

Edit - oops. sorry thermomixer!!!

Sarah, that's the helpful thing about reviews, although we all have different tastes too.

To get hubby on board, maybe get him to look through your books for something he likes the sound of.  Then hop on here and have a look for any reviews before you try it.  Might help.

Or, have a look around the forum for member recipes with good reviews.  Let us know what flavours he likes and we might be able to suggest some winners.

Thanks Cathy. After last nights dinner I've been thinking of doing just! I have 4 TMX books now and there are so many recipes I want to try but I'm reluctant to. At this point I should admit my husbands is a really fussy eater  :( and trying to find food that he will eat and enjoy is hard, especially if I want my kids to eat it too (DD4 and DD1)!

Any suggestions would be much appreciated  :)

Basically he only eats chicken (breast only) or beef. Loves garlic, onion and chilli - and lots of it. We eat a lot of curries and just got the Indian cookbook 2 nights ago so I'll be trying out a few recipes on the weekend.

He doesn't like fresh herbs at all, but especially hates fresh coriander and dill. And now I know that he hates cardamom too ;-)

Not a big fan of creamy stuff, we tend to substitute cream for a lesser quantity of yoghurt or sour light cream. And he's not a big fan of pasta. I think he would like the fettucine salami dish if I served it up, but he's a bit fat concious at the moment so would probably be upset about the fat in the meat. Sometimes, like last night I end up chucking a tante and telling him he can cook his own bloody dinner from now on.... but he only cooks steak!

Thanks!

OMG  :-)) he is a fussy eater. I would buy him a steak every day then (for him to cook and enjoy himself) and then make what I wanted to cook  :D then there would be no problem  ;D
