Do you know what's in your Breadcrumbs?
« on: April 12, 2010, 04:38:45 am »
Hey All,

Well we'd already decided to make our own breadcrumbs for our FAILSAFE diet anyway, but in cleaning out our freezer of non-FAILSAFE foods, we read the label on the back of a packet of Homebrand "Breadcrumbs". Rather than transcribe the extensive list of ingredients here, go checkout the photo on Damaris's blog http://candidcountrylife.blogspot.com/2010/04/our-new-bimby-has-arrived.html.

Suffice to say, when I saw "Tuna Oil" and "Fish Gelatine" I decided I'm never having store bought breadcrumbs again (not a seafood fan). It looks like they just scrape all the leftovers off the bakers floor and stick it all in a bag!

Russell.

Russell,  another benefit of TMX.  I have several bags of breadcrumbs in the freezer,  and use them for all sort of things.  All from home made bread.   Some I make into crumbs and while the machine is running ,  tip a bit of oil in.  These are good for sprinkling on top of savory dishes.   White crumbs I keep separate for sweet dishes such as Queen of Puddings.   and Xmas pud. Very little goes to waste with the TMX.

Great ideas Chooky.  I make my own but had never thought to add the oil so must give this a try.

Eauk! I make my own breadcrumbs and have never honestly thought what could be in store bought ones.

That's unbelievable - I would have assumed that Breadcrumbs would be, well, breadcrumbs!
Great blog too.  There is a list somewhere on here, so make sure you advertise yourself.

Speaking with my DD last night I mentioned this thread.  She went to her pantry and came back with a packet of breadcrumbs, reading off all those ingredients listed.  Talk about an eye opener  :o :o  I'm sure her mothers' group will hear this story at their next get together.

See now these are things I missed out on....having always made our breadcrumbs from our stale homemade bread!  ;)

Mine doesn't but the only people who eat the crusts are DH and I ... toasted and with butter  - not good for the waist line  :-)) :-)) so into the freezer they go (out of temptations way) ready for breadcrumbs  ;D ;D ;D

Thank goodness I stopped buying the packaged garbage when we got our TMX is all I can say. I am horrified  :o :o

See, my Dad alwasy said "Eat your crusts, it'll make your hair go curly". Well I loved bread crusts, and now I'm bald. I wonder if that's significant?

 :D

I make lots of breadcrumbs as DH doesn't like home made bread, so it's only me and occasionally my DS when he's home who eats it. I generally slice my bread up and freeze a few slices. All my less than perfect loaves have been made into breadcrumbs.

Sometimes I dry the bread out in the oven first for toasted breadcrumbs, these grind up nice and fine and are great for coating fish or salmon patties. For fresh breadcrumbs, I often add herbs, parmesan and melted butter and use to top casseroles.

I've always made my own breadcrumbs in the food processor before I had thermie, so have never looked at the ingredients on the packaged ones. Will do so today when I go to town.

Thanks for the heads up Russell!
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.
