Recipe Review - Steamy Orange Soy Chicken

This recipe is in Meat On The Menu, page 84.

Used 500g chicken thighs, weighed after defatting and steamed broccoli, cauliflower in the basket, adding snow peas for the last couple of minutes. Thawed out some rice and made fried rice on the stove top whilst the chicken was cooking, adding onion, bacon, peas, finely sliced omelet & soy sauce.  You only  need a scant teaspoon of cornflour mixed with some water or the sauce will be too thick - in which case just water it down to the consistency you want.

Lovely meal 5/5.

I always have rice in the freezer (it makes the best fried rice when thawed) and defatted chicken thighs as well so this meal needed very little preparation and was on the table within 30 minutes or less. For larger famiies you can add more vegies on the tray above the chicken putting the larger, harder vegies in the basket and the softer smaller pieces on the tray for even cooking.

Thanks for that Judy, I was eying this recipe up for this week.
Did you enjoy the flavour of the chicken and was it orangey?  (If you know what I mean  ;) )

Yes we enjoyed the flavour Maddy but I wouldn't say it tasted orangey.  I only used a small orange but I think the sauces and herbs overpower the orange flavour.

I used to do a sweet orange chicken with thighs, cooked in a pan and of course they go nice and caramelly.
To 600g thighs, the marinade is 2 large oranges juiced, 1/4 cup Kikkoman Teriyaki Marinade Original Flavour, 2 tblspns honey, 2 tspns seeded mustard, 2 cloves crushed garlic all whisked together and the chicken marinated overnight.  I'd like to taste the difference between this one and the one in the book so must put that on my list of things to do - already sooooo long  ;D ;D  I would steam it for a closer comparison of the 2 recipes.

JD,  thanks for reviewing this recipe.   Another one to try.  Like you,  I always have rice in the freezer and chicken thighs also.

Well this was tonights dinner......and I had the opposite to you Judy.
All we could taste was the orange, but no soy.  I didn't add coriander....can't stand it, so added an extra spring onion.
I enjoyed it, but hubby and kids didn't  :-\

The chicken looks nice and tender.  Shame that the taste didn't live up to expectation.

Made this tonight.  It was ok, just not particularly exciting.  I made it with Bron's garlic rice, I think it would have been too dry with plain rice.  I don't think I would make it again, and certainly not one I think my kids (2 and 3) would like.

Maddy- did you toast your sesame seeds?  They look raw....

I think I would give it 3/5.

It all is good except for the sauce when made from the marinade
It desperately needs some palm sugar ( or other sweetness ) to counteract the orange peel, orange juice, rice vinegar, soy sauce
There is not enough hoi sin to make a difference
Other than that it worked well
Chicken is moist
I also cooked rice and steamed vegetables at the same time
All in one
If the sauce was sweeter it would have masked the bitterness and would have been better balanced and more enjoyable
It certainly didn't lack flavour - as mentioned in another stream ( found later )

Cooked this tonight for the fusspots.  The boys also had some friends round so we fed 5 children in total - 3 of whom are diagnosed with high functioning autism - most loved it, a couple (mine) said it was too orangey.  In defense of the recipe I was too lazy to juice the orange and so just threw a peeled orange into the thermomix.

I had a taste of the recipe and thought it was really nice.  Very quick and ideal for a midweek meal.
