Can someone please help me get started?
« on: July 24, 2010, 12:25:46 pm »
Hi everyone
I have a TMX on the way and was wondering if anybody could give me a few suggestions for recipes to gain confidence on and get me started.  I am trying to avoid that initial recipe flop I am sure will happen to me!  Hmmm....... is that cheating?   :-))
I just know that I am going to have my sceptical husband peering over my shoulder waiting to jump on my failures so I am trying to make me and the TMX look good!   It took ALOT of pestering to get one!
We are sugar free and refined grain free so I am not sure where to begin.
Any ideas very appreciated!  I am dying to get to the shops and stock up on ingredients!

hi tarosuma
the first thing i tell my customers to make is the vegie stock concentrate which comes in the everyday cookbook, this is used in recipes throughout the cookbook.  another easy one to get started on is custard.
dont stress too much about it, you will find you will have too many ideas and not enough time to cook them all!!
all the best

Hi tarosuma.  Try the chocolate truffles (kids section) to sweeten him up (the sugar comes from the dates/sultana's), also try this for breakfast (omit the honey and vanilla essence if you want and you don't have to freeze the banana's for it to still taste great and give you an energy rush for the day).  Soups are always good, try the potato and leek and minestrone (I usually cut my veg into cubes not in the TM as I like them chunky). Judy dawn's chicken and vege soup (in soups section) is especially good and you use lovely barley, lentils and split peas to boost up the protein content.  Beef chilli con carne is great  - you could have it over brown rice or mashed potato.  Cook your rice first and put in your thermoserver to keep warm.  If making mashed potato I would cook your chilli beef first and put it in the Thermoserver and then make your mash.  Don't be too stressed about failures, they happen and it's part of the learning curve you are about to undertake.  Once you are familiar with your machine things will become very quick to make and you'll be making up your own recipes or converting your old favourites.  Most of all just have FUN!! ;D ;D :D

Purple Anti-Aging breakfast shake (Gluten free)

Ingredients:

1 tbls quinoa flakes         replace with 2tbls oats if
1 tbls rice flakes or millet flakes       gluten free not needed

2 tbls linseeds (can add a small handful of almonds for extra protein if wish)
2 peeled and frozen bananas cut into ice cube sizes (still works well without being frozen)
80gm frozen blueberries (can use other fruit here if you want ie; strawberries, mango etc)
240gm fresh orange juice
1 tbls raw honey (can reduce this as bananas make this quite sweet)
1 tsp vanilla bean extract (or a dash of vanilla essence)

Method:

Place quinoa, rice flakes or millet flakes and seeds into the TM bowl. Mill 40secs, sp9.
Add remaining ingredients and process for 45 secs on sp 9.
Serve immediately.
This recipe can be doubled very easily. I also use some almonds and sunflower seeds (couple of tbls each), sometimes a little desicated coconut and 1 tsp dulce flakes (for iodine).  I alsp use at least double the blueberries and add other frozen fruits to make it more interesting - strawbs, melon, mango, kiwi fruit etc - whatever is in season.

Following some discussion on another thread about skeptical husbands, perhaps get him to help choose your first recipes.  Print off a few that you like the sound of and choose together.  If you choose familiar flavours, you're more likely to enjoy the results, rather than trying an ingredient combination you're unsure about.  My flops have been because of new flavour combinations or unsuitable recipes choices (ie flavours we don't like very much), and that's not TMX's fault.  So leave that experimenting to one side for the short term.

Definitely start with some basic ingredients like the vegie stock concentrate.

Definitely begin with vegie stock concentrate. Remember it is meant to be a yuk colour and very salty, so it isn't really for tasting.
Then you will have it on hand for soups and risottos.
Custard is very nice and even a fruit sorbet in the cold!
Good luck.

How about one of the whole wheat breads?  That is, if your husband likes breads.  I can just about guarantee he will love this one.

Check these photo instructions from Isi.

Everybodys Bread

It does use just one tablespoon of sugar (to feed the yeast) but you can substitute honey or another natural sweetener (I tried Splenda in yeast doughs and it does not work well - that is the brand name in the US.)
I mostly use agave syrup because I am diabetic and it has the best glycemic index for diabetic use of any natural sweetener.

Bron's Spanish Vegetable stock much nicer than the one i the EDCB. http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=836.0
It is a lovely green colour; take note that the weight of the veggies is mentioned.
Hummus, salads and smoothies all good things to start with.
Just use it at least once every day and you will soon just covert recipes to make in the TM!!
