Malt biscuits

Malt Biscuits
I made these between baking 2 loaves of bread. They are quick, easy and tasty. The recipe was on a scrap of paper that was torn out of the Age several years ago. It has Gail Thomas's name on it.

125g. butter
90g. raw sugar, and extra for topping.
1 Tablespoon malt extract, liquid.
1Tablespoon condensed milk.
1 cup S.R. flour
90g of sultanas if you wish. (I left these out as I wanted a very plain biscuit )

Set oven for 180c, FF

Place raw sugar in bowl of TMX and zap to make like caster sugar.
Add softened butter, and cream 4 mins. on speed 3, scrape down bowl.
Add milk and malt and mix, speed 3 , 2 mins.
Tip in flour and on REVERSE mix for 30 seconds.

Using a small ice-cream scoop,(2 1/2cm.) or a teaspoon, place small mounds on to lined baking trays. (makes 28)
With a glass with a flat base dip base into extra sugar and lightly press on to each biscuit.

Bake for 15 mins. Cool on tray for 5 mins and then on wire rack.

If you subbed honey for the malt you would have honey snaps.

Molly - Whipped up' a batch and they're a hit!!!  I just crushed a malt biscuit over my French Vanilla Sara Lee ice-cream...  then mixed it in.  Oh, Yummy. Failsafe and delish!!

willmac - Achookwoman, I took your advice and just made these using honey, all I can say is the kids have eaten so many already, so I would say this was a success, great idea.

Hestonfan - The biscuits were delish- I made a few substitutions due to lack of exact ingredients in my larder and they were great!
I used 2 Tbsp of Ovaltine. Instead of condensed milk I used 1/2 cup whole fat dried milk powder, to make up for the lack of liquid I used 1 Tbsp maple syrup and 1 Tbsp water. Half of the batch has been demolished already! Thank you for this recipe.

faffa70 - Well Chookie, inspired by hestonfan and with Bron's words of "never let not having an ingredient stop you from making a recipe" ringing in my ears, I searched my cupboards and came up with a tin of Malted Milk Powder!!! So two heaping tablespoons of MMP mixed with 1 tablespoon of hot water and I had (sort of lol) a malt syrup. Made the biscuits up and they are a hit (though passable on the malt flavour - definitely malty but they would like it more so). Thank you all.

Denzelmum - Turned out nice.  Mine were not very consistent with the thickness but the thicker one taste nicer.

Chookie - I use a small ice-cream scoop for all my biscuits and they are pretty consistent.  They therefore all cook in the same time,  although I do turn them around half way through.

Great recipe Chookie.  Now we can even make the biscuits to go into that Christmas recipe for crushed mints, malt biscuits and condensed milk.  You'd know that one, has been around for ever.

CP 63,  these are so simple and really nice and crunchy.   Made these for the grand children but DH said that the BIG children liked them.
Molly glad they a "Failsafe" because they are really nice.  They are the sort of base that you sould add to.  Good luck.

Check out the icre-cream section - there are lots that have condensed milk in them.  Is there a failsafe flavoured ice-cream?

I just make plain vanilla icecream,  milk, cream, sugar and vanilla.  Or else I use yogurt.

I found some malt extract down at Coles near my DD this morning, my Foodland didn't have any.
