Chopping Nuts - coarsely
« on: October 13, 2010, 05:15:58 am »
Does anyone know how to coarsely chop nuts in the TMX?  I seem to end up with crumbs or big chunks with little nicks taken out.  I basically want to chop into large-ish pieces (say almonds into thirds) for my muesli, biscuits, etc.

Any advice?

Thanks.  :)

I have the same problem and sometimes resort to chopping them by hand for a better result.  I have found though that chopping for a longer period at speed 4-5 does a much better job than using the turbo button (instant crumbs). Hope this helps a little. :)

I do the same as Chelsea, and when I take them out if there are any large pieces I either return them to the bowl and chop again or do it by hand.

Haven't tried it myself with nuts but what about dropping them on to spinning blades that are running at 5-6?  I find this method (a bit faster though) works best with cheese, onion, garlic etc.  Much more even chopping.

Haven't had any luck with chopping nuts in the TMX.   Might try speed 4/5 and see what happens.  Thanks Chelsea.

I chopped hazelnuts at speed 4 today to make Tenina's fudge (yum!) and they turned out better than using the turbo button, but still not great.  I think I will hand chop them in future for special things.

Thanks everyone.  I'll give it a go on 4/5.

Only tip - as Chelsea suggested - Turbo - but only a few at a time and a couple of seconds.

Dropping them onto spinning blades meant that some got blasted when I tried and some stayed whole.  Thought it would work well, but was a mixed bag of nuts, chopped and nut meal.  Maybe I should have done fewer and stopped faster?
