Which ice cream maker is the best?

I make it whilst we eat dinner and have soft serve for dessert that night, then freeze the rest.
I have no issues with it not being scoopable straight from the freezer.

virgo why don't you go to the "Desserts" section of this forum and search for icecream. A whole heap of recipes come up where you don't need to have an icecream maker. Also check out Tenina's website as there are a few there. I have a lovely chocolate one in the freezer from her website and it is superb (and no ICM reqd)

Maple syrup & walnut ice cream

100g walnut pieces (I might cut this down to 50g next time)
150ml maple syrup - 100% (I used Canadian maple)
300ml double cream
200ml canned evaporated milk (well chilled.  Place in fridge day before using)

Put the walnut pieces in food processor and process until finely chopped.  Be careful not to process then into a puree.  Set aside.

Mix the maple syrup and double cream together until well blended.  Set aside.

Pour the chilled evaporated milk into large bowl, and whisk until thick and doubled in volume.  The mixture should leave a trail when the whisk is lifted.
Fold in the maple syrup/cream mix into the whipped milk until combined.

Pour into ice cream machine, and follow manufacturers instructions.
Just before the ice cream freezes, add in the walnuts.

We had a compressor type machine (I think I gave it to OH for a significant birthday some time ago as he is an ice-cream addict).  It broke down recently and we replaced it with the other, bowl in freezer, type.    I  much prefer the new one for a number of reasons, the primary one being that the old machine took up a lot of room and was really heavy so to get it in and out of the cupboard wasn't easy, but keeping it on the surface wasn't really feasible.

When we've made the ice-cream in the bowl, we transfer it into a container to put in the freezer so, in theory, you could make multiple batches on the same day.   Once the ice-cream has been in the freezer for a while, it is a bit hard so it is worth taking it out and putting it in the fridge before you want to use it. the length of time depending on the type of ice-cream as some are softer than others.

One useful tip is to keep the bowl in a bag in the freezer as otherwise it can be a bit painful to handle as it gets so cold

I have this machine too and have to say I love it.

I think it makes fab icecream and quicker than the ones where you store the bowl in the freezer.  I had one of those years ago but never really got on with it and found freezing the bowl a huge faff.

This machine has, for me, two problems - it needs to sit on the work top all of the time (or at least for 24 hours before you use it ...) and its REALLY noisy!

Mine is packed away at the moment (its Winter here in the UK), because we are moving shortly but when we get settled I shall find room for it in the laundry room so I can set it going and shut the door on the noise!

I can't believe it - here we are on a THERMOMIX forum and people are talking about buying icecream machines!!  (USE YOUR THERMOMIX, it's the best icecream machine of all  ("Simples" as Aleksander Orlov would say).  Better to put whatever you're willing to spend on another machine towards a second TMX bowl.

Looks like a great maple syrup & walnut recipe Maddy; I'm going to try it this evening but with pecans instead of walnuts.

Well I have been toying with the idea of getting one to use with tmx custards & yoghurt. Aldi special $26.99 this week too good to pass up! Hope it works ok!

I was planning to get an ice cream maker until I tried the 40 second icecream recipe from here on the forum. I've changed my mind now.

It's beautiful isn't it. I'm still getting my icecream maker though. I hope to be able to make some lower fat icecreams. I cheated and looked at the instruction manual on line and they had some recipes.

The 40 second recipe is so smooth and delicious and easy to make. I've made so many variations now.

I have had my Breville icecream maker for years now and think its fabulous.  It does have the bowl in the freezer, but I store mine in the 'drinks' fridge, where I have more room in the freezer than my kitchen fridge.
