Coconut oil deodorant
« on: December 01, 2010, 04:42:23 am »
This may have been posted before, but this is the deodorant I have used for a year and think it's great.

http://www.passionatehomemaking.com/2008/03/update-homemade-deoderant.html

I love that the thermomix can whiz this up in a matter of seconds.

When I  made a batch today I'd just finished making rice milk so there was still a bit of heat which I guess melted the coconut oil.  I will try it next time cold as I'd like to see how it goes because it's  quite difficult mixing it by hand when the oil is cold.

Oh thanks so much for that recipe - I can't wait to try it!  I buy an all natural, organic one which is great for me but very expensive.  I LOVE coconut oil for so many other uses so am looking forward to seeing how it goes.  My latest success with it was curing a yeast based nappy rash on my baby.  But have also used it for cradle cap and ringworm. I remember that it is an anti-fungal/anti-bacterial so that makes sense why it might work for a deoderant too.
Thanks for posting, I like the look of that site/blog it came from too.
Susan

I have heard that coconut oil is great on nappy rash, glad to hear you've found it so.  Yes, it is a lovely website.

I hope you have success with the deodorant, I have found it to be really good.

Okay guys, here it is - the sunscreen recipe!!  You can also use it for body/face/nappy rash cream if you leave out the zinc.

This deodorant is fantastic! Lasts all day, doesn't mark clothes and smells yum. Made some for gifts as well this Christmas and everyone has loved it.  ;D

The texture varies a bit depending on the temperature. I guess l would call it a formed cream paste if that makes sense?? You just apply with fingers. My lot is just being kept in a glass jar with lid at the moment, but I put my friends pressies in cute little round containers.

I do the same as Katesjoy.  I have read that some people put theirs into an empty deodorant roll, but I just can't see that working.

Mine went into a old roll on deoderant container no issues. And other then DH getting a rash (we think his skin doesn't like bi carb) mine holds up to the test of 2 days no shower and only one application, it is pretty good with a few drops of rose oil too.

I used only 1 tablespoon of bicarb, 1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon of arrowroot and 6 tablespoons of coconut oil. Love it.

I love this for everyday day use. The consistency turned out great. When I got my first deodorant I remember my mum taking me to the chemist to buy a little tub of 'MUM' cream deodorant and that is what this reminds me of. I had absolutely no appreciation for my mum saving me from the aluminum in all the exciting sprays the other girls had but I can't thank her enough now!! This is what I did:
80g Tbsp Coconut oil
30g baking soda
35g cornflour
2 Vit E capsules (prick with pin and squeeze out)
couple drops of clove oil
Melted coconut oil at 37C mixed in other ingredients and stored in a small Tupperware. easy!!  ;)
