Help Please re EDC Updates!!!
« on: December 15, 2010, 02:09:14 am »
Hi there,

I have noticed on here lots of people talking about old and new versions of the EDC and of various updates to recipes etc. I have only had Thermie a month and since my EDC said it was printed in June 2010 I assumed I had an up to date version. Whilst I have found the book to be a bit under par I assumed it was all correct. Well yesterday I made my first batch of buttermilk scones and was so frustrated with how wet the mixture was. So I decided to see what others on the forum had to say about it. I saw a few posts saying that the recipe had been updated from saying 380mls of buttermilk to 220mls. That quite a difference! So what I'm confused about is when this would have been updated and how I am to found out if any other recipes have or are being updated? So frustrating! This was my first failure in Thermie and it looks like it wasn't even my fault....LOL! I adore Thermie but am not so sure about the EDC. Also getting a bit frustrated with the forums.....have only been on here a short while and it's crashed 3 times already! Does this happen a lot??

Thanks in advance,
Jen

Hi Jen,
Sorry to hear about you buttermilk scone issues. :(  I remember the same thing happening when I first tried them.   I'm pretty sure I was told that the quantity in the book is ok if you're using shop-bought buttermilk, as it's thicker than the homemade version.   I agree it's very frustrating that no note has been made of this in the latest edition of the EDC though.  That's the only recipe that I've noticed a big issue with.   Re. the forums, I think it's been changing to a different server or something over the past week, so there have been a few hiccups in that process.   I've not been on here a whole lot yet, but have never known it to do that previously, so I'm sure it will all settle down now.

Hi Jen,
I always take recipes with 'a pinch of salt' - lol!  If the texture or consistency looks wrong, or it tastes too sweet or not sweet enough, I just adjust as I go.  I think for new owners, though, the EDC is usually pretty good, and as you get used to converting your own recipes you'll probably find you mostly use it for a guide to methods for similar things. My latest EDC I've had for a while, and it says 220-225g buttermilk for the scone recipe.  Maybe you accidently got an old one?  You should ask your consultant.

The forum has just changed servers, and is having a few teething problems, but hopefully they'll be sorted out soon.  Don't give up yet!

Hmmm I'm still confused. Just spoke to my consultant who was no real help. She said I have the most up to date version (actually July 2010) so I don't get why mine says 380mls buttermilk and older books say 220-225mls?? She said the the new facebook recipe thing will be how they let us all know about updates to recipes in the future. But how have you all known in the past when a recipe has been updated?? She told me to Google my recipes to check them, but sounds a bit ridiculous to me to do that each time I want to make something. Wish the book was "correct" before they released it!

Well, I wouldn't worry too much - I haven't had too many problems with the recipe books, except for personal preference in tastes (eg. more or less salt or sugar, needing more vege stock or spices...)

But check the forum for 'tweaks' and recipe reviews if you're unsure about a recipe - you'll get lots of tips here.

I sense your frustration JenniCB. We've all fought our way through the EDC and it's quirks. MJ has been emailing HO this year with things we feel need to be changed in the next version.

Re the forum, I've been a member for over 2 years and it has gone down about 6 or 7 times in that time. Most being when the change to the new server was made.

Maybe HO needs to issue copies of the recipes it has tweaked as a goodwill gesture. i know the creme brulee recipe has been changed since getting my tm because the recipe in my friend's book is different from the recipe in mine. That's all well and good for me, but what does someone do who is the only one they know with a tm? BTW, the minestrone recipe has also undergone changes. Those are the only two I know of - how many other recipes out there have undergone changes, I don't know.

There is a thread on here somewhere that (I think) CP63 has added the last lot of changes that were sent out to consultants and customers. Will try and find it and add the link ...
